Text Tool

The Text tool places text into an image. When you click on an image with this tool the Text Editor dialog is opened where you can type your text, and a text layer is added in the Layer Dialog. In the Text Option dialog, you can change the font, color and size of your text, and justify it, interactively.

I think there is a lot to be learned about this tool but I am afraid that it has been overlooked as a tutorial subject and our resources are limited, let's check it out.....

Outline Text

The following video demostrates how frustrating it can be to find good tutorials. The author had all the moves down right but did not use audio or significant text annotation to help the viewer. Afterwards in the comment section the author added the step by step text instructions. I was able to follow those and then made my own video which follows this one:

Ok, I'm stumped already. After I added my text I went to Select but the "From Path" selection is grayed out and not available.

I will look into that Rich, headed out grocery shopping. Sometimes the correct layer is not selected etc, will get back to you later.

Disregard, I figured it out. I had to add this extra step that wasnt in the video tutorial(Select the text layer in the layers box then click on Layers in the main menu then Text to Path) before the the "From Path" option became active.

I made my own step by step instructions to outline text:

How to do outline text

1. Open new blank image.
2. Add text(use a bright color for best results).
3. In the main menu click on Layer then New Layer. Check the transparency box and click ok.
4. Select the text layer in the layers box then click on Layers in the main menu then click Text to Path.
5. Click on Select then click From Path(the text is now outlined).
6. Click on Select then Grow. Choose your pixel size(The higher the pixel size the wider the outline). Click ok.
7. Choose the Bucket Fill tool with the color you want for your text outline.
8. In the layers box be sure the Background layer is selected then click on the text to fill in the outline color.
9. In the main menu choose Select then None.
10. Save to your computer.
