Truth Commision Considered

Calls grow for Bush-era 'truth commission'

Debate is heating up in the United States on establishing a "truth commission" to investigate whether the Bush administration abused its legal powers under the guise of its "war on terror."

"Nothing has done more damage to America's place in the world than the revelation that this nation stretched the law and the bounds of executive power to authorize torture and cruel treatment," said Patrick Leahy, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

He opened a hearing on Wednesday pressing for such an investigation saying it was badly needed as each week brought new revelations of alleged abuses under the administration of former US president George W. Bush.

On Monday, the administration of new President Barack Obama, published nine internal memos dating back to the Bush years.

They revealed how the former administration had given itself ample room to skirt the law on a number of controversial practices, such as the transfer of prisoners for secret interrogations or the power to wiretap phones without warrants.

Any eventual investigation could take various forms and be led either by the Congress, the criminal justice system or an independent commission.

I have no problem with a commission-provided it doesn't turn into a political football. Other than that-let's move on-we have enough problems to worry about right now.

my dad went to sweden when bush was elected. the great people of Sweden hated Bush. my god, they demonstrated against Bush. my dad recalled(he has passed) when sitting at a coffee shop there were police there in the coffee shop, they said how did it happen that Bush was elected. they hated Bush(sorry G.W. or is it W.), loved Clinton. everyone loved Clinton. i don't care if he got a b.j., my god there have been many presidents that have gotten sex or b.j. when in office. And some of them were Great presidents..........

We don't need debate! We need a little action. I don't know whether Obama should be apologizing for the Shrub or not, but if Bush didn't pull all the shady stuff to start with, Obama wouldn't feel any need to apologize! Screw the terrorists! I want my Bill of Rights back! Puppet boy and his puppet master, Cheney, should be in jail just on that alone!
