Truth Commision Considered

Calls grow for Bush-era 'truth commission'

Debate is heating up in the United States on establishing a "truth commission" to investigate whether the Bush administration abused its legal powers under the guise of its "war on terror."

"Nothing has done more damage to America's place in the world than the revelation that this nation stretched the law and the bounds of executive power to authorize torture and cruel treatment," said Patrick Leahy, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

He opened a hearing on Wednesday pressing for such an investigation saying it was badly needed as each week brought new revelations of alleged abuses under the administration of former US president George W. Bush.

On Monday, the administration of new President Barack Obama, published nine internal memos dating back to the Bush years.

They revealed how the former administration had given itself ample room to skirt the law on a number of controversial practices, such as the transfer of prisoners for secret interrogations or the power to wiretap phones without warrants.

Any eventual investigation could take various forms and be led either by the Congress, the criminal justice system or an independent commission.

I have no problem with a commission-provided it doesn't turn into a political football. Other than that-let's move on-we have enough problems to worry about right now.

my dad went to sweden when bush was elected. the great people of Sweden hated Bush. my god, they demonstrated against Bush. my dad recalled(he has passed) when sitting at a coffee shop there were police there in the coffee shop, they said how did it happen that Bush was elected. they hated Bush(sorry G.W. or is it W.), loved Clinton. everyone loved Clinton. i don't care if he got a b.j., my god there have been many presidents that have gotten sex or b.j. when in office. And some of them were Great presidents..........

We don't need debate! We need a little action. I don't know whether Obama should be apologizing for the Shrub or not, but if Bush didn't pull all the shady stuff to start with, Obama wouldn't feel any need to apologize! Screw the terrorists! I want my Bill of Rights back! Puppet boy and his puppet master, Cheney, should be in jail just on that alone!

There is nothing patriotic about the patriot act. The problem is America has been taken over by corporate interest and international bankers. IT is good that Bush is gone, however; OBama is following in Bushes footsteps. We need to do away with the two party system because it is rigged. Regardless who we vote for, corporate dictators win.

The commission needs to be completely independent of the government. Otherwise it will be like the Warren Commission. AS I see it, there job was to hide the facts that Kennedy was shot by more than one gunman. It was a government conspiracy and our government wanted to cover it up.

After recently watching the movie-Fair Game, which told the story of the outing of Valarie Plame, CIA agent whose cover was blown by the Bush-Cheney administration, I think the American people need to demand a thorough investigation of the entire administration. It was becasue of her husband ,(Joe Wilson) not agreeing with the Iraq war scheme and the administration trying to connect yellow cake plutonium to Saddam Hussein trying to buy it from Niger. This proved to be false and Bush-Cheney know it.

Skooter Libby was thrown under the bus and Cheney wanted to totally pardon him, but Bush wouldn't do it. I believe that Bush wanted to find a way to go back to Iraq, to avenge and finish what Daddy Bush couldn't do in the Desert Storm War of 1991. It was also a way for Cheney's Haliburton to get "no bid contracts" to help his friends. Unbelievable and true.

This incident has died and Bush and Cheney will never be held accountable.

Yes this was another illegal move on the W.Bush administration. This was just as bad as tricky Dick in Watergate. When D.Cheney purposely blew the cover of Valarie Plame , the Bush administration should have all gone to prison for treason. Skooter Libby was just the patsy to take the fall. Again, our controlled media kept this out of the news.
