Crop Tool

Is it obvious that I am an Iowa boy who lives in a town that makes John Deere tractors? When I hear the term "crop tool" this is what naturally comes to my head!

Looks like there is quite a lot we can learn from what on the surface seems to be a simple tool. Let's see what we can find out!

Using your keyboard arrows.
Playing with the tool I noticed that you can use your keyboard arrows to move or expand/contract your crop selection only if you have the crop cursor in the right spots. Placing the crop cursor within the corner "handles" as they call it will allow your keyboard arrows to do the expansion/contraction. Placing the crop tool cursor within the image but not in the "handles" will allow you to move the selection with your keyboard arrows. Watch how the crop tool cursor icon changes as you move it into the above mentioned areas.

Videos
All the Crop Tool videos show the old version of crop tool which basically uses the rectangle select tool for cropping. Until the tutorials catch up with Gimp we will not be benefiting much from the videos.

Allow Growing
The above image is my example of "Allow Growing"
This option allows the crop or resize to take place outside the image or layer boundary. If the option is checked: you can draw the crop rectangle outside the image border. The resulting image has the same size as the crop rectangle. The area outside the original image limit is transparent.

I am not sure where I will use this feature although I guess if I want a specific size of an image as a result of cropping then this would work. If I find a use for this, I will update this information.

Currently layer only and Expand from center is self explanatory and very useful.

Fixed Aspect would be great for cropping for photo reprints. 4x6, 5x7, 8x10 etc

Fixed Size :
This is a very useful function especially for those EONS banners of 610x100 size!

I have learn quite a bit here, I use to use the "rectangle select" and then crop function but now I will be using the Crop Tool.
If you find other useful information about the Crop Tool feel free to add it here.
