Gee, we don't seem to have a lot of activity here, do we? Actually, I've never made a pond in a whiskey barrel, but I don't see any problem with it working just fine. The only thing I wonder about is where exactly you might be able to put any kind of filter (Possibly one of those attached to the pump?). If you don't have fish in there, I guess you could just replace the water frequently, or if you have enough plants in the water to keep it pretty well shaded, you may be able to keep the algae to a minimum.
Good luck on your project!
Thanks saw a display at Lowe's, they had two barrels one elevated above the other and one spilled over into the other one, was very pretty but expensive and less expensive if I did it myself as am a "fixer upper",have also read that a child's swimming pool can also be used and put rocks around it. Yes you're correct, looks like just you and me ha ha thanks

The only problem with kids' swimming pools is that you're stuck with those bright colors & pictures all over them! If you have to use a liner to cover it up, you might as well dig a shallow hole and just use the liner :-)
It would be a great idea to use the barrels. I had two and they did fine. I had some water plants in mine as well as goldfish. You will have to fill the barrels up and let the water stand in it for a while to seal the barrel. As the wood has shrunk and the water will make the wood swell and stay in. good luck and enjoy. I had barrels for quite a long time, they worked quite well. I used plastic ones, and when my fish spawned and the fry were still small we would bring one barrel into the house and put it next to the windows in the kitchen, we could watch them grow all winter and then put them in the large pond in the spring once it was warm enough. Grew a lot of babies that way.
