Pontiac -- what does it mean to you?

I never owned a Pontiac, but I've always dreamed about it. The eventual demise of the muscle car company will be a sad day for all of us. GTO, Firebird, etc -- no more, or what? Thoughts? Stories about your Pontiac?

I just heard that last night Mike- WOW. Our father's Oldsmobile went a few years ago and now the Pontiac?

I think the US car makers took a wrong turn when they started using the same platform for different vehicles. Heck you were getting the same thing with different lights, trim and emblems.

As a Kid- you opened the hood and Chevy motors were orange, Ford motors were blue, Mopar was a greenish, I think Olds was gold wasn't it? Anyway- they weren't just a different color------they were different motors! I miss the good old days.

I's sad anyway & I never even owned a Mule-i-ac

LOL- Happy Motoring! G99

All my life, I have driven, modified, and built high performance cars.

My first NEW H/P car was a 1968 Firebird 400 HO. My Dad (long gone) drove a Catalina 2+2 421. It is a sad day indeed.
Worst of all, GM announced after the decision to shelve Pontiac as a division, it also decided to end "indefinitely" all HP cars in general-that means no more SS Cobalt, Malibu, Impala, Trailblazers, and Siverado (already gone), and probably the Equinox "sport" as well. There will be no Caddy CTS-V either.
I have never, ever owned a German or Japanese vehicle and I will not.
I drive my 1994 Z28, very modified, with great pleasure. At 64 years old, I am the little old man of Pasadena (go Grandpa, go). I love a good run 12.9 at the strip or a road course (I modified the suspension to do it in the Camaro).
Although I have been assured by my local Chevy dealer that the Corvette and the new Camaro are not part of this huge mistake, it does not satisfy my needs.
I was going to sell the 1994 Z but under these new circumstances, I will keep it.
You will not see me in an Acura NSX, Nissam GT-R, or an Audi S, or any BMW M series car, not ever.

Best
Ricky

Rick, hate to say your local dealer is wrong but he is. GM is planing on shutting down the Corvette plant in the near furture due to declining sales.

The Silverado is gone? I didn't know that. I was thinking of getting a pickup but if I can't get a Silverado, what can I get? Will the GMC Sierra still be available?

I need to put google to work and check this out...

Pontiacs have played a big part in my life, with a lot of good memories. My best friend in Junior High, her father had one of those cool 62s with the parenthesis tail lights, Patty and I used to argue (good naturedly of course)about them, I called them parenthesis, she called them Quote marks. Mr Willison thought we were both right. Then there was a boy I dated in high school, had a 55 Cheiftan, by this time I am a big Chevy fan, and we teased each other about our cars, on which was better. I had Kenny on my mind when I found my first car, a 1961 4dr Sedan Starchief, it was white with a bright red interior, so one of our friends dubbed it Moby Dick, the great white whale.

Today, there is Kool Kat, my Husband's 1966 Pontiac Catalina. Let me tell you, we don't go anywhere in that car that someone doesn't comment on it, even slammed, shaved and primered the Pontiac lovers of this town even the purists like what he has done, because even with those minor changes, they have done nothing but accentuate the good looks of this car. My husband loves to watch his car drive down the street, which works out very nicely for me, because I love to cruise this car, we go to two big shows every year that have a cruise on Saturday night, he sits with his buddies, while the ladies all pile in Kool Kat for the cruise. It's like being sixteen all over agian, crusin with my girlfriends.

The man I dated when I was 19 years old had a '64 or '65 GTO, black with red interior, four on the floor, a beautiful car!! We spent a lot of time in that car!

Fast forward, we got back together last April ( ! ), and in November we saw a GTO just like his at the Imperial Palace collection in Las Vegas!

So, did you get the GTO or one like it for old time's sake?

I've always wanted to get either a '66 Impala or a '68 Cutlass for nostalgic reasons. I keep looking for the right one but haven't found it yet.

I only owned one Pontiac thru the years. It was a '70 Catalina 2dr hardtop. I'd sure like to drive one just like that again. I felt pretty damned COOL in that thing. I confess, I sold it to buy a Studebaker tho!

I doubt very much that GM will get rid of the Vette soon. Actually sales for the Vette have been a bright spot for GM. Although the current recession/mini depression will certainly affect demand for this upper end car. But I couldn't believe that Pontiac will be gone. My kid brother had a gorgeous '61 Catalina bubbletop with a 4 spd. and a tripower 389 in it. A rocket!!
I've owned a Corvette for over 45 years and can't imagine GM or Chevrolet for that matter without a Vette. As far as I have heard, Chevrolet will still be campaigning the Vette in the American Lemans Series this year too. Great racing!! This year the Vettes will be running in a more stock class (GT2)against Porsches, Ferraris, BMWs and the Ford GTs. My old Vette. a restored '64 which I have owned since new, is still a blast to drive, still with the lumpy cam and off road exhausts. It still turns heads, and on summer nights, with the top down and the pipes burbling out back, that's livin'. An American small block V-8 beats a four banger rice rocket any day.

My only beef with new vettes is I feel they are over priced, but I'm probably wrong! I'd love to get into one for $30k or so.

I remember Pontiac as being the solid built car that people expected from GM -- didn't they even have a door-slamming commercial to prove that point?

My dad always drove Buicks, but I don't really see that they have much to offer me. Cadillac has certainly turned the corner from old-timer cars to cool, hip cars! And the Escalade, what more needs to be said!?
