Long haired Rottie

I saw this and wanted to share. I know this is a major fault in the breed standard...but I think it is a recessive gene that could cause this. I was reading a Rottie thread online the other night and the kids were talking about having a white Rottie. Personally....I think that's awful....but I don't have room to go into it here.

As I was researching the history of long haired Rottweilers, I came across this link. I never knew that purebred Red Rottweilers existed. I also saw another article mention blue Rotties.

Fraulein is a long haired Rottie. She was a puppy when we bought her and we were looking for a dog with a good temperment. To our surprise her "puppy coat" never changed to the standard hair coat. However, I clip her hair since it is quite hot in Florida.

I was told that the long haired variety were used as working dogs (herding) back in the foundation of the breeding.

Buddha's litter had another feature most don't know about, the curly haired Rottweiler. Yep, seems there's a recessive gene that causes Rottweilers to have curly hair. One of Buddha's sisters was called Curly Sue by the person that bought her. She had longer than average hair and it was so curly. I think it is so cool that there are reds, blues, long hair and curly haired Rottweilers. It makes them unique.

Oh...I know. None of this is the dog's fault. But what I'm talking about...is.. .there are so many Rotties in rescue, my personal opinion is that people should not breed, just for the sake of breeding. That's what makes these dogs more susceptible to bone and joint diseases and cancer. My boy is not a perfect example of the breed....but I couldn't love him any more.

Yes this is caused by a recessive genetic gene. Back in a day it was something you do not see alot of. But I have seen more and more of this in the last 10 years with some of the breeding practices or I should state lack of a good breeding practices.

If breeder wants to know if any of his dogs carry this recessive gene there is a simple test for it. It is that simple to prevent.

Thank you for pointing that out, Rottaholic. I thought the recessive gene for a long hair coat was more uncommon today. I see I was wrong.

I wonder if the unique colored Rotties were in-bred to make more of them. I know that is how the white tigers came about. A parent was bred to it's offspring (one of which was white) and all white tigers are decendents of that family. Now they are breeding white tigers to yellow tigers to strengthen the blood line. They have found the tigers to be healthier when doing this.

We just rescued a long haired male Rottie. The cutest-sweetest dog in the whole wide world. He was nearly dead and laying under a tree when we got the call. Been feeding him every two hours and after two (2) weeks, he is gaining weight and his bones aren't sticking out. Slowly moving him into the family as his appointment for neutering isn't until the 16th of November and sadly this moment we had a rescue come in in heat...trouble even for neutered and spayed dogs. So happy to see the picture above. These Rottie's look like they are mixed with Airedale but who cares they are precious. We are in Salisbury, MD Sally

Sometimes I would even get compliments on my long haired Rottweiler. The coat is so soft and fluffy.

That pic looks like Rocky after I have not brushed him for awhile, his "winter coat" is shedding more than his "summer coat", so I wonder if he has part of that gene. Samantha, even tho she was a 70% Rottie mix and longhaired never shed as much as he does??? Doesn't matter, but good subject!
