This is a tool I have used many times but I wish I could get better at it. Hopefully by the end of this tutorial I will be better at it, Check inside.....

Free Selection Tool (Lasso) The Free Selection tool, or Lasso, lets you create a selection by drawing it free-hand with the pointer, while holding down the left mouse button (or, for a stylus, pressing it against the tablet). When you release the mouse button, the selection is closed by connecting the current pointer location to the start location with a straight line. You can go outside the edge of the image display and come back in if you want to. The Lasso is often a good tool to use for "roughing in" a selection; it is not so good for precise definition. Experienced users find that it is often convenient to begin with the lasso tool, but then switch to QuickMask mode for detail work.

As you can see from the Tool Options box there are only a few options, all of which we learned in the Rectangle Select Tutorial. have found that the "feather edges" feature really helps me in using the Free Selection Tool (FST). First let's start with the official Gimp tutorial:

Well that was not very informative. Let's see what else we can find on the web..... coffee break time....brb! Alright, back, had lunch which was done by "free selection" from the fridge. Here is a good video showing the lasso tool and it goes on to show a few more selection tools:

This would be a good time to play with an image and use the lasso tool. I will see what I can come up with.

Played around with an image I use in Chit Chat Chums, here is the base image:

Here is the results, I lasso and copied the dog on the left and moved him to the right, then reverse the image and rotated his head a bit. I then lassoed an arm off another dog and gave my purple dog an arm which he never had before. I ran into trouble early when I cut the original dogs head out, it left the transparent pixels (checkered grays and whites) behind, not a white background. So I created a new image with the same dimensions and a white background. Copied my base image onto the new image. Now when I cut my lassoed selection there was a white background behind it. I learned something, so it was a good day!

I played around with the rectangular selection tool on some icicles where I had removed the background and the the lasso tool on a picture of snow. Course, the eraser came in handy, too, right after I would paste an object to straighten up the sides! LOL

I read where you had to shovel some snow, gJ - was it very cold outside?
