Great Backyard Bird Count

Just wanted to encourage everyone to spend some time this weekend participating in this year's Great Backyard Bird Count. All you have to do is count birds for at least 15 minutes on one or more days of the count, February 13–16, 2009. You can count for longer than that if you wish!

Count birds in as many places and on as many days as you like—one day, two days, or all four days. Submit a separate checklist for each new day. You can also submit more than one checklist per day if you count in other locations on that day.

You can find more information and sign up here:

Cheers and happy birding!

I just had time to do my first count. Not too many around then, but I know there'll be more later.

This has been very enjoyable. I live in an Apartment community near a busy road, but that doesn't deter the beautiful bird songs and calls I can hear. There are lots of trees and shrubbery. It's amazing what you notice when you stop, sit still and listen and watch. I heard a Woodpecker for the first time this morning. Looking forward to tomorrow.

Yesterday, I counted more than 30 small birds in the back yard plum trees. Don't know what kind they are as they never were still long enough to get a good look at them. They certainly do enjoy the tangled branches of the tree and the peanut suet cages hanging up there.

I've downloaded my tally sheet. I'm ready to count. This should be fun and informative.
We lost most of our blue birds, due to West Nile Virus, in the 90s. They would just fall out of the trees dead. I called the County Extension Agent once and he took two of the dead birds to send them off for testing. A few weeks later he put an article in the newspaper explaining about the virus. I don't know if they will ever come back to central Georgia but I miss them.
I have seen a woodpecker lately. They are rare here.
Mostly we have cardinals, brown thrashers, robins, barn owls and such.

I participated in the GBBC this year and have participated in the count since 2004. It has always been a source of enjoyment for me during the cold month of February here in Milwaukee WI. I submitted three photos this year of some of the birds I saw during the count. For those of you that participated...I hope you saw some of the birds in your area...and even if you didn't...wasn't it fun to be out there?

I counted 50 chipping sparrows, 13 white-winged doves,12 black-capped Carolina chickadees, 16 western cardinals, 14 tufted Titmouse and 11 common doves. Here in Central Texas there are many birds migrating. The ones mentioned are here year round.
