Installing Gimp on a Mac

Downloading and Installing Gimp for Windows is fairly easy, but more complicated if you use a Mac. You need to install x11 first in order to run the Gimp program. x11 comes on the 10.5 cds and some of the 10.4 cd's.

If you have a newer version of the Mac OS, you can view this tutorial to learn how to download and install Gimp. - The GIMP How to download - view link www.youtube.com/watch?v=JePWp3qhi6M If you use Mac OS version 10.4 (tiger) and have your install disc, you can try installing x11 from your disc and then download and install Gimp as the tutorial shows.

If you have trouble with the installation or don't have the Mac OS discs, you can go to this blog and follow the instructions: view link cjmart.in/2006/12/01/install-x11-on- tiger-without-the-tiger-install-dvd/ You download and install 2 parts of x11 and then go to the Apple update link to update them. All the necessary links are in the blog. Then you can download and install Gimp.

You can download x11 for 10.3 at the apple site, but I haven't found a version of Gimp for 10.3. If one of you locates one, let me know!

Thank goodness, I have 10.4.11 on my secondhand laptop. When I first got through all of this, the Gimp program seemed not to want to work. However, after trying to open it and it not working a few times, all of a sudden, it started loading and it has worked since then. It's seems like a lot of trouble - but it's worth it!

When I installed gimp on my leopard yesterday x11 was a default download...I would have to have chosen not to download it...I think I followed the link from the CSS group...
This morning I found a program in my applications folder called 'spaces' related to x11 but didn't open it yet...
I'm assuming once I have time to explore gimp I'll find out what it is...

Glad there's another Mac user in this group! Maybe when can help each other find information about Macs and Gimp

Here's how things work for me. When I click on to open the Gimp program now, Gimp will start opening and so will x11. The x11 will be at the top of the computer screen, then Gimp goes ahead and opens. When I'm through, I go to the main tool bar of Gimp and quit Gimp. Then I have to quit x11. However, I think the program is a little different in Leopard. I'm not really sure what x11 is except you also need it to run some of the other open source software that's available in a Mac version.

When I was originally hunting for information, I went to the wilber-loves-apple forum that's part of the Gimp Community at gimper.net. The link to the Mac forum is view link gimper.net/viewforum.php?f=19

However, today in the support section at the forum I found the link to the "Wilber Loves Apple" website and help page. The help page contains more information about downloading and what to do about problems that might occur. view link darwingimp.sourceforge.net/howto.html

So, we have a place we can go to find help if we run across problems getting it to work. Another bit of good news is that they are working on a version of Gimp that won't need x11. That will make it even better!
