Did you know that there are 165 million dogs and cats in homes as pets in the US? Did you know that according to the best estimates of the major animal welfare organizations that approximately 5 million dogs and cats wind up in shelters every year?
Did you know that if only an additional 2 to 3 percent of the people looking for pets were to adopt one from a shelter, that there would be no excuse to kill healthy adoptable dogs and cats?
Did you know that the vast majority of shelters PREFER killing healthy adoptable pets instead of adopting the proven practices of the No-Kill movement? Read this blog: view link if you don't believe me. Most of the shelter workers do not share that attitude, but are stuck with regressive shelter directors.
Did you know that there are shelters in New England begging for puppies to adopt out and that there are shelters in the Southeast that routinely kill litters of healthy puppies?
Did you know that hundreds of thousands of homeless dogs are imported into the US from other countries? If there aren't enough homes for the ones that are here (an argument that I reject) why are these dogs being imported?
Did you know that most animal welfare organizations OPPOSE mandatory spay/neuter laws, but most animal rights organizations (which are actually anti-pet) support them?
Did you know that the reason that people do not spay and neuter their pets is because they cannot afford the surgery, yet mandatory spay/neuter laws cause those people to lose their pets to shelters where they are then killed? Instead of pushing for mandatory spay/neuter laws, push for subsidized spay clinics in low income neighborhoods. That would save lives, not end them.

wHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BE RESPONSIBLE OWNERS?

Several years ago, I got involved in a rather heated discussion with a woman who had a couple of large male dogs that she refused to have neutered. She was complaining that her neighbors had a female that was "in heat", and she was afraid her dogs would get hit by a car in their attempts to mate with it. When I suggested that she take her own dogs in to get fixed, she got this smirk on her face and said something incredibly stupid like "Boys will be boys" followed right up with she didn't "believe" in getting male dogs fixed and ruin their fun in life.
I asked her what she meant by "believing" in fixing animals- was this a new religion I hadn't heard of? She promptly told me that do-gooders like myself should drop dead and what the hell did I know about it?
To this day, I'm so glad I walked out at that point, or I would still be in jail-
