I too believe that spaying/neutering is the right way to go for everyone concerned but I experienced something wierd recently. I've been taking care of a(nother) stray who showed up on my front porch over a year ago. He was very wild at first so all I could do was leave food out for him. Last fall he decided he trusted me enough to rub up against my legs and it has progressed now to the point where he'll come in the house when I open the door and let me know when he wants to go back outside. We still have litter box issues but that's a different story. So I've obvious decided to keep him. A few weeks ago I boxed him up and brought him to the vet for "the works" including neutering. I know it was the right thing to do but I felt guilty for some reason. I think I was afraid that I was taking away his ability to survive on his own, taking away his wildness. I've never thought twice about neutering any of my cats but somehow it was different with him. The only change I've noticed is that he doesn't smell as much anymore. He had a real earthy smell before. Now if only I could solve the litter box issues...

I like my kitties to be indoor kitties and if they're not fixed they cry to much to go out and in all good consciense how can you let a pet have litter after litter when so many older animals are still looking for good homes. Our dog is a rescue and spayed and it makes her a much better pet

I too have had the spay/neuter argument with many people over the years - and with people who think their particular dog is so "valuable" that puppies (or kittens) will sell for lots of money. Only the best of the best should be breeding for any reason. My four lovely pets are from "backyard" breeders - terrible people. My two cats from a failed cat breeder - Bengals are only worth money if they are the few with the fabulous markings - all the other kittens are just kittens.... My Boston Terriers came from a house that had little to recommend it and the babies were locked in the bathroom to keep them from being underfoot. Keep putting the message out there!

There was a sad case on the Judge Judy show yesterday involving an fairly young Akita who had been spayed, had a pacemaker installed because of heart problems but was incontinent. The last owner decided she wasn't going to put up with it any more and turned the dog over to the pound who promptly euthanized her. The plaintiff was an attorney who for whatever reason had paid some $6,000 for the dog's medical care. He claimed the defendant had ordered the dog killed at the shelter. It was a messy case but the real victim was the poor dog who didn't ask to be born in the first place.

You are now Eddie's care tender. He does indeed know something is up but I find that dogs have a short memory if you now will take the time to become his companion. Take him for walks, play games, introduce a new companion to now keep him company. This is especially important if you work outside the home. I have two dogs, Sebastian (a black Labrador) and Ginger (a German shepherd mix). they are brother & sister, rescued from a meth household when they were puppies. They have spent their entire lives together and when one inevitably passes on, I will find a suitable replacement. I find that animals do much better in two's. They take hikes together and when I'm not home, they play together and keep each other company. If I take one for a walk without the other, you can hear the one left behind howling at the top of his or her lungs. It's quite comical but probably not to the neighbors. I've spent time training each dog to obey commands so they are people friendly and obedient in crowds and park or trail settings. I never thought I would own a dog (I'm a cat person) or two but they have been a great source of pleasure for me an I truly appreciate their natures and ability to boldly assess environments, people and situations without fear or intimidation.

The night before Ginger was to be spayed, I just happened upon a program that said German Shepherds typically have 13 puppies in a first litter! I was so taking that dog to the veterinarian the next day. She would have been a great mother dog, too but now she has cat companions that rub against her and lover her unconditionally. She still doesn't know what to make of that.

I have rescued many cats over the years and still have 11, last count. I have had every one of them spayed and neutered. I have only one male cat that sprays which I am tenaciously keeping track on and attempting to train to go outdoors before the mood strikes. I have a neighbor that stole and dumped 3 of our Siamese cats, claiming their urination on her newly layed lawn was turning the grass yellow. I find it abusive to dump cats and here in Oregon it's against the law. But unless you have photos of the event, the police will do nothing without proof. After the horrid winter we've had, her lawn looks like a hurricane hit it so what was the point? I should charge her for all the mice, shrews and moles they have killed off her new grass. Vermin removal services rendered.

OMG I got into such fights here about the spay/neuter issue. I have 25 kittys, I took them all on so I could get them fixed. It has cost me a small fortune. I feel so deeply about the plight of the domestic cat. It makes me so angry that a few of us have to take on the responsibility of so many.

This is the best thing you can do for your pet. They live a longer life and are healthier also. I have 6 cats all are spayed or neutered. Why let unwanted pets come into the world to suffer? There are many orginizations that help pay the cost of getting you pet fixed. So do not let money be the issue.

♥The country is full of stray cats and dogs that nobody wants. All at one time cute kittens and puppies but then they grow up and they don't want them anymore and they just throw them out like they're trash.

There was a young woman in the park who had cats that were always having litters. She had a beautiful calico that was getting old enough to get preggers and I said you should have the cat spayed. She told me and if I'm lyin I'm dyin "I will get her spayed but I want her to have the experience of love first."

I said lady, cats don't romance it's an instinct and you are an idiot! She just shrugged and walked away. I got the feeling I wasn't the first to call her that. She has since moved away. Boy talk about dumb.

Even my personal checks arefrom the Humane Society and say on the bottom "Stop animal overpopulation - spay or neuter your pet" or "save a life - Get your next pet at an animal shelter."♥

We have eleven babies...seven are rescues. It all started fifteen years ago when I rescued this tiny little three pound Chihuahua who wasn't even one year old and already had a litter of puppies by C-section. Ruby is still with us and will be sixteen in June. The latest two rescues were from a very sad situation. Baby Baci came from a puppy mill and was covered in fleas and ticks and sores over her entire body. Bella was chained outside to a tree with no form of shelter. They had even stopped feeding her. Thank God for my sons friend who lived next door. With a joint effort she is now sleeping soundly in her bed on my sofa. Peoples inhuman treatment of animals shouldn't surprise anyone because they treat people the same way. It's scarey out there. Please, don't stop because each one of us can make a difference.
