Enough Nostalgia, Yet?

I find out today that Cedar Rapids, Iowa had one of their coldest days in history (period of record 1891). It got to only -12 yesterday. Only once in its history has it been THAT cold, in 1904. The temperature fell to -29 that morning. That is a new all-time record.

We've got some of those -30 temperatures in northern New England, just like old times. Had enough yet?

When I hear of a summer like 1936 in the USA, then maybe we can talk about the end of the world. We did get a taste of that in 1988. I wonder if folks in the upper midwest thought it was the end of the world back then.

"One hundred degree heat in the North Woods"
"Texas summer heat in the Corn Belt for the Eight Straight Day"
The headlines must have been like that back in my grandparents' day.

I just read the story from the "expert" at Weather Underground yesterday about the loss of Arctic Ocean sea ice over the last two summers. He gets that straight but misses the bigger point. We've had remote sensing for only about 30 years. That's way too short a period of records when it comes to "global climate changes." Let's try for something like 300 years. Maybe then, you can convince me. I doubt that those who "have a master's degree in science" will agree with me. (Yeah, I'm making a reference to the satirical "Ask Dr. Science" radio bit.)

True, we have mariners' accounts about the difficulty of the Northwest Passage; they are probably reliable. I wonder how many shippers are anticipating it next summer and hope to save money transporting goods from Europe to East Asia.
