Starting a non internet home based business

I thought I would start a thread on ideas for starting a non internet home business.

1. Make a list of your interests. A good strategy when you’re starting your own home based business. You want to choose a business that you will enjoy. Is there a hobby or craft you’ve always had a passion for? Are you interested in health or sports? Career or educational interest? Enjoyment is the key. If you aren't going to enjoy it your chance of failure is a lot higher.

2. Once you have a list of your interests, research the market in your area. Do you think there is a demand in the area of your interest? Do you think there is potential or profit in this area? It’s important, besides loving your home business, to actually make money at it. Also look into related areas that there may be a nitch for your business. Something that will work in an urban environment may not work in a rural environment and the other way around.

3. Don’t settle on the first business that comes to mind, research lots of options. Read books and articles and check out all sorts of business ideas. Researching how to start your own business has never been easier with the internet at your fingertips.

4. Once you’ve done your research on your areas of interest, make a list of the types of businesses that interest you.

5. Make a list of the sorts of equipment you’ll need to start your own home business. Remember to keep records of any money you spend as these will be tax deductions for you.

6. If you are starting your own home business as retirement income and your spouse wants to be part if it, discuss all aspects of the business with him or her so you both know what to expect. You want to find a home business you’ll both enjoy and which meets both your criteria for what you want to do in retirement

I'm going to start a list of ideas for a home business and I would like you to add ideas as you think of them.

Good old standbys: House cleaning and handyman.
House cleaning. Senior living communities are usually looking for these and well as people who live very busy lives. You will need to set your own limits of what you will and will not do. Move furniture? Do windows? You could specialize in what others don't do. A must for any business where you go into the homes or businesses of others is that you are honest! Word of mouth travels fast.

Handyman. Some of the same things apply as in house cleaning. You could specialize in something that is needed in your area. Outdoor yard work. Repairing or painting. Have trailer, will haul. This can be enlarged or refined according to your talents and likes or dislikes.

Organization. This can be combined with cleaning and handyman. Are you good at organizing? A lot of people aren't. This is something you will want to do when the person is home. You will need their input. Also for your own protection. They won't be able to say you have stolen something for instance.
Organizing a garage or basement. You can just advise on how to and products needed or you can do the whole thing which could include cleaning and hauling.
In the home closets and drawers. Same thing you can do the whole thing or just advise. Same type of rules apply.

This is just a start. To be continued

This is great advice and a great idea to do.

How about Running errands? If you like to be out and about, you could run errands for the elderly or busy. Grocery shopping, dry cleaning, etc. Or you could also transport elderly to dr's appts. - however, I think for this, you need to look into the insurance/liability issue of having someone else in the car.

Excellent idea laurie1009.
Along the same lines how about delivering lunches. Usually only pizza places have delivery. If you would deliver from say fast food places to a factory for instance. They would call in the orders, you would pick them up and deliver them. If you did 2 shifts 5 days a week and had about 20 people per shift and charged every person $1 dollar. Something along those lines. You get the picture.

Delivering again. Most small towns have no where that delivers anything. You could deliver everything from pizza and food to business and homes and groceries etc. to handicap and elderly. You would be able to charge a fee at both ends.

Here's a thought: Christmas decorations take-down service. You won't have any of the stress of the intereior-decorator decisions that might go with putting them up.

Just find out where the owner wants to store them, bring a ladder and get to work.

Guaranteed repeat business. Offer a five-year price that is stable compared to the first year.

Make sure you have a name & contact point on the back of your jacket while you are taking down the outdoor lights.

Get one of those magnetic signs and stick it on your car while you are parked out front and taking down the indoor decorations.

Find out where the grouchiest neighborhood associations are active and send your brochures to that street.

If you like animals, you could offer pet sitting, or a pet taxi service - taking pets to and from vet/grooming appts. - again, check out insurance/liability.

Or train to become a pet groomer.

You could also sell pet products online as an affiliate or wholesale/dropship arrangement.

People are not going to be buying new furniture in today's economy. You could do custom furniture covers. Refinish furniture. Repair furniture. Reupholster furniture. Make furniture, etc.
When my kids were growing up I had some home made bunk beds that were better then anything you could buy in a store. They were made from 4x4's and 2x4's. Each end was the ladder and they had 2x4's across both sides so they were safer.
