Textured Oil Painting

Hi!.
I have a question, how can I put some texture in my oil painting? I like to use like sand or plaster or wood chips or any other materials available and mix them with my oils, but first, don't know if is possible to do that (without affecting the painting) and second, do I have to seal that type of material before using it on my canvas?...

Also, what other materials, that you know of, I can use?

thanks for your response!

There is so much that can be done with palette knife and rags that I have not experimented past them. I would suggest going to the library for more information if nothing pops up here. You might check with Wickipedia also. It's amazing what it has to offer on just about everything under the sun.
