Second career- do I really want that?

I am reaching retirement and I am looking forward to a much needed break from my 40 year career as a nurse but I am not ready to be home all day alone. I want something that keeps my brain sharp while still letting me enjoy retirement. I am thinking about a "second career" but I am not sure what I would do. Help!

Two years ago, my wife and I retired to Sunset Beach, NC after working desk jobs for 30+ years. Although, the idea of passing the days golfing, fishing, and napping on the front porch is very appealing, we both wanted to keep ourselves busy with part-time jobs. I couldn’t be happier with the job I have now as a first-mate on a charter fishing boat. I meet new and interesting people every day from all over the country. I’m outdoors and more physically active than I’ve been in a long time. And best of all I get paid to go fishing!

What about something part-time in the tutoring or teaching field? After i retired, I became a tutor at one of those learning centers. You can tutor kids of all ages for 1-4 hours per day in math, english, or standardized testing. The job is not draining but is incredibly fulfilling.

For inspiration, I recommend you read Marc Freedman's "Encore: Finding Work that Matters in the Second Half of Life. It's filled with stories of people who created meaningful work, told in their own words, and should spark plenty of good ideas for you to explore!

Dear Jenn

What is your passion? What was it you said you wanted to do 40 years ago and never did? Take this moment in your life to assess what you have achieved (not what you did) and what you once said you wanted to achieve. There is where you will find the answer to rounding out and fulfilling your life.
