I believe that the second movie is to be a "connector" to the Trilogy. He is supposed to go into the index and take information from there about what happens to the main characters in the interim. The difficulty will be to stay true to Tolkien in telling the story.
I am also looking forward to the result!

Forgive my confusion but I'm not sure when Hobbit (1) is due out and you are speculating about the sequel.
By-the-bye, just discovered the Group by accident and joined so I wouldn't lose the link. I was still a smoker when each of the three very long movies came out and did not take a single smoke break during any one of them! That was a big deal at the time. (Yeah, I've now quit smoking but have yet to quit wanting to. Been over three years now...)
Congratulations on quitting. It killed my mother, and it wasn't pretty.
I know we are speculating way ahead of time, but the movie industry seems to go strong even when the rest of the economy tanks!
One thing I look forward to in the summer TV doldrums is to re-watch the trilogy. It is always exciting, but I find I don't want to watch it more often than that. I don't want it to get too familiar.
To clear up any confusion. The Hobbit may be in pre-production at this moment with Del Toro as the director and Jackson as the producer. It has already been announced that there will be another movie - tentatively being called a second Hobbit movie - and that it will fill in between the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings. The following is from the Weta New Zealand site:
In Early Conceptual Design Phase
The Hobbit and its companion movie will be shot on location in NZ utilizing the expertise of Weta Workshop and Weta Digital.
Peter Jackson is the Executive Producer. The Director is Guillermo del Toro. Peter and Guillermo are also writing the screenplay together with Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens.
The two films are planned to premiere in 2011 and 2012 respectively.
