Favorite destinations

I am new to the group and was so excited to join as I would love to talk to like minded folks about travel; one of my many passions.

I was hoping we could discuss our favorite destinations be them obvious or obscure.

My favorite has to be cinque terra in italy. Cinque Terra loosely translated means "five towns" and each of the ficve towns has their own distinct look and feel from the beach town, to the fishing village, to the one nestled in the hills. You can hike between all five if you are feeling up to it. I must warn you however that the hiking can be perrilous but the views are breathtaking.

If hiking is not your thing then simply hop on the train that shuttles inbetween each of the towns. It truly is an experience not to be missed.

I too have been here and the mediteranean coast is one of the best places in the world. Small, quaint and wonderfully historic. A must visit when in italy.

Welcome to the group. I've gotten some terrific ideas from this group on Hawaii (this year's vacation trek). Last year we did a fly/drive SanFran to Seattle with a sidestop in Victoria. We're thinking about Europe for next year, if the Euro cooperates:)

My favorite place to visit is England, with northern France coming in second.

I love England, from the small village in County Durham in NE England that some of my ancestors came from, to the opposite end - the hustle and bustle of London.

We spent about 6 hours in that small village. It was humbling to stand in the church that my 5 greats back grandparents were born, married, etc. It is a small village, just 2 streets and a few side streets that connect the 2. On our way back from Scotland, we left the station in Darlington and took the cabs to this little village. I looked out the windows the whole way, taking in as much as I could. I did not even realize that my son took a photo of me, I was so engrossed.

I think we made bit of a stir there. When at the church we spoke to a local woman and she asked where we were from and why we were there. Word traveled fast. We left the church and went to a local news and grocery shop. The clerk knew who we were. By the time we wandered into the town pub for a few cold pints and our dinner, they were expecting us. All seven of us just felt so very at home there. We plan to go back, spend a few days this time. Rent a car and visit the other little villages in the area, as so many of them are in our genealogy info. Who knows, maybe we will have time to find an actual relative!

One of my favorite things to do when in another country is to sit in conversation with locals. There is not better way to get a sort of feel for the country.

London... I could fill the screen, but won't. I was there in May 2007 and can't wait to return. One of my goals in life now is to see England in each season. My next trip will be in the fall. I am thinking early October. Need to research that as I would like to see autumn there. For winter, it will be Christmas season.

I have been told that the NE can be quite cold and windy in the fall due to winds from the North (think I have it right) Sea. Anyone here know if that is so?

I look forward to reading about the trips of others here!

Cinque Terre is also one of my favorites. In fact a group of us are going there next March - and florence. We go to a different place in Italy every year, stay about a week and explore the area. Sorrento is another favorite - we were there this past March.

Not many tourists pick the Cinque Terre for their favorite. I may after I finally have time to get off the train! I've read about the towns and seen Rick Steves' film of them. I hope to get there next time. Welcome to the group! I have so many favorites that I can't list them all in one post.

I just returned from my trip to Europe with my granddaughter where we had a wonderful time. We went to Barcelona, Spain and to Milan, Venice, Florence, Pisa, San Gimignano, and Di Parco Nazionale delle Cinque Terre. We hiked between Riomaggiore, Manarola and Corniglia and I agree with you: the views are breathtaking. I would like to come back and spend at least one week there to explore the region. Ciao
