I'm not a big sushi fan, but my husband and three sons (17, 18, 20) are HUGE fans. My middle son loves it so much, that like you, he learned to make it. For Christmas one year we gave him a gift certificate for the local fish market, and a basket of sushi fixin's. He learned the basics, bought the basic equipment, and has gone on to 'invent' new combinations. It truly is an art form, and I admire anyone who tries it!

I love sushi. I have been to Japan twice and the real thing is unbelievable! I do make sushi at home though. Some tips I learned are:
1. when make maki zushi, line your bamboo roller with plastic wrap
2. when adding vinegar-sugar mixture to rice you must fan the rice to make it glossy.
3. always buy quality short grain rice for sushi (best available in US is grown in California)
Have you tried edamame? Fresh soybeans in the pod. Easy to prepare. Just boil, drain, toss with salt. Then you put the pod up to your lips and press to pop the beans into your mouth. Serve with Sapporro beer for a very delicious treat especially in the summer.
Edamame....this has been great , my kids love it and its easy so we have it all the time...We have found a few places where you can buy it in bulk not just in the small pkgs at the sushi / fish section. We love it with butter and salt on it . but i guess we kill the health value that way.

I love Sushi. It's been a couple of years since I first tried it. As time went by, I started getting curious as to how to make it myself.
I started with an on-line search for Sushi recipes and then came across a site that had pictures along with the step by step instructions on how to do a basic California roll. I then found a bamboo mat for about fifty cents, and ten pack of nor sheets for a dollar and change.
I now buy 20 pound bags of rice and make sushi at least 3 to 4 times a month. This weekend I should be making Dragon rolls since I was told about a store that sells the bar-b-qued eel.
Last month I took a little class to learn how to make the bar-b-que eel, salmon, hand rolls and the boats. In fact just last night I made about eight hand rolls that disappeared as soon as I put them on a plate.
I'm getting hungry as I type this.......
Hello Steve Presley, I am a Southerner also and although Sushi does not appeal to me, I have a grandson,7 yrs. old who just lovs the stuff. He insists on having it at least once a wk. I don't think his mother would ever try to make it however so they eat out.
What fun! I love it!
I fell like I'm eating clean food when I'm eating sushi. No sauce, no fillers just the delicate taste of fresh ingredients.
Welcome, I hope you'll share your secrets!
Love the stuff...and so does my 16yr old! Matter of fact, outside of a tuna cassarole, its the only way I can get her to eat fish.
They do have sushi 'rollers'...I know some consider this cheating....got mine at the Japan Center Ace Hardware store in San Francisco. Use plastic wrap with that as well...keep hands moist...you can chop/slice/dice some of the veggie filling a day ahead of time...not all that 'expensive' if you do it yourself.
