Hi!
I would suggest the Thuja socks listed on www.knitty.com. I'm not affiliated with this site in any manner, but it was my first sock and I found the pattern to be very easy.
Also, the yarn you use will be dependent on your gauge but as a general rule, I buy my yarn from either www.elann.com, www.knitpicks.com or from Hobby Lobby. This week, Hobby Lobby has all sock yarns on sale and you would be able to feel the yarns before purchasing them.
May I also suggest you join a group specifically for sock knitting such as socknitters.com on yahoo. They're a great resource if and when you get stuck.
I hope this helps!
Valerie
I would suggest any stockingette stitch sock made from worsted weight yarn. My first sock was Knitting Pure and Simple's Beginner sock #9728 by Diane Soucy, but it's not a free pattern.
I would like to suggest Ann Norling patten its not free but very very easy and easy to understand.Or do what I did ask for help from my neighbor or my favorite yarn shop.onehotmama or go to knitting on the net they have free patterns and easy
I also would suggest using the pure and simply sock pattern. Like before it is not a free pattern.
I used it and haven't stopped making socks. It like potatoe chips can't just make a pair.
Also Silver's socks pattern is very easy to use. You can find it here www.cometosilver.com/socks/
