Cheetahs anyone?

Hi, I am a past Cheetah Project volunteer in Namibia (March 2001). If anyone can say that Earthwatch changed his/her life, that would be me. After that project, I never left the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF). I was hooked as soon as I realized what an intelligent approach CCF has: you have to help people in order to conserve wildlife. If you'd like to learn about my experience with CCF, you can visit my web site, www.geocities.com/crocsetal and click on Working with Cheetahs. I think cheetahs are amazing, and I thank Earthwatch for having introduced me to this amazing project.

Hi! Thanks for the great post!

We tell people that Earthwatch can be a life-changing experience, but it just sounds like hype coming from us. That's why we need folks like you :)

Laurie Marker (founder of the Cheetah Conservation Fund and a long-time Earthwatch Principal Investigator) is an amazing person. Her approaches to resolving human/wildlife conflict are very realistic and get results! Her passion and hard work have saved so many of these beautiful animals, and provided invaluable information to help sustain their population.

I'm very proud that Earthwatch has been a part of this work. Just in the last 10 years, over 400 Earthwatch volunteers have gone to Namibia to work with the Cheetah Conservation Fund.

If you'd like more information, visit view link

We have a team every month next year, and we've already had a lot of signups - some teams are nearly full already :)

And if you have questions about what it's like to go on this expedition, please post them here - and do take a look at CheetahPatricia's website - it's very good - and lots of great photos!

Hi,

I went to CCF with Earthwatch in April 2003. I loved it too. So interesting, well organized, and fun, of course. We learned about them, their habitat, there conflicts with farmers and what is being done to resolve these. We fed them, took their temperature and monitored their heart during vet procedures. We were able to do some projects that helped monitor where the cheetahs roamed. I frequently think of my experience there, I'd love to return, maybe I will.

Jo, I guess I just missed you when you visited CCF! I arrived in May 2003 to stay there for a year. Now I am in So. Florida (I see you are too). Great "meeting" you through EONS!

Hi,
You are really lucky to have been able to go there for a year.
Are you doing things with animals here, I am looking for some things to do locally.

I was hoping to do the Cheetah project this year, but I had a knee injury recently and will have to wait. I am going to try for next year. I am curious about accomodations -- what are they like? I also don't know what a "bucket" shower is -- do you only get one bucket of water? Pardon my ignorance.

Hello. I'm off to see the Cheetahs in about a month and I can't wait!

I have a few days before I meet up with the group and was wondering if you have any suggestions on what I can see or a tour group to get in touch with before the cheetah fun begins.

I'm studying to become a vet and cats of all sizes are so dear to me. I can't wait to actually help out with these beautiful creatures. It is going to be amazing.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Jomiami:

Sorry for not responding. I had not been able to access this account. I am working for CCF here in the US. Not directly with animals, but that is the most difficult part for non profits, to find people willing to work for animals without actually BEING with them. All the best,

Patricia

Hi hydra88:

Terribly behind on this account! I am sorry. Sorry about your knee injury. But hopefully you'll be ready to visit us soon.

Accommodations are "normal" by western standards. Depending on capacity, you might get a rondavel (small hut) or a room. Both have walls and roof. Bathrooms/showers are shared, but we don't have bucket showers. They are normal showers. Hope this helps. Visit our web site, cheetah.org, and click on Volunteer for information.

All the best,
Patricia

The above was for Meerkats2008. This is for hydra88. Sorry!

I really don't have suggestions as to tour or safari operators, but you could contact our eco-travel agent, Nuevas Ideas, and they can probably help you. nuevas-ideas@mweb.com.na. Not sure if the e-mail address will show here. Otherwise, please write to me at patricia at cheetah dot org.

All the best,
Patricia

I actually found a really nice tour agency here in the UK: Native Escapes Ltd

They have been very helpful. I think I probably would have paid less had I booked in Africa, but I wanted to ensure I would have a tour to go to before I left. (I am going to Sossusvlei for 3 days before my journey to CCF)

Cheers!
