Columbus Day

Columbus Day is celebrated on October 12th, it is observed on the second Monday in October in the Americas to pay tribute to Christopher Columbus. (Columbus Day is often referred to as "Discoverers' Day" or "Pioneers' Day".) They celebrate all explorers and the idea of exploring and discovering.) Columbus is credited with discovering the "New World", what we know as the North America. We know today that he rather re-discovered this area and was the first to publicize his findings. The Vikings had already established settlements in North America when Columbus sailed by.

There are varied views on Columbus's character and mixed emotions on whether this day should be celebrated. Columbus is known as one of the greatest mariners in history. He is considered a visionary, a great explorer, an entrepreneur, a poor administrator, and destroyer of native cultures.
On August 3, 1492 Columbus departed Palos, Spain with three ships under his command, the NiƱa, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria. The crew was composed of about 90 men, mostly seasoned sailors and a few criminals who sailed in return for amnesty. This is his famous voyage in which he is credited with discovering the New World. Columbus never actually set foot on North American soil, in fact it is believed he never even saw North America. His first landing was on Watling Island in the Bahamas. He also stopped at Cuba and Hispaniola. He was made an admiral and governor over all these lands.
Late in life Columbus suffered from gout and failing eyesight. On May 20, 1506, at the age of 55, Columbus died. He died a fairly wealthy man even though he had has lost his political power and royal privileges. As with his birthplace his resting-place is also a mystery.

well, I have news, the Chineese were the first to discover the new worlds of the Americas and austral-asia, they have discovered maps dating to 1418 that show the Americas and Australia, so the exploration happened some time before that, then the Vikings put setelments on the northeastern shores of America,

in the pacific northwest Columbus day has more history as the day of the big wind, 10/12/62 was "The Columbus Day Storm" with winds exceeding 120 miles an hour, I had started art school monday that week, on friday afternoon, (Columbus day) I had gone to the Lloyd center to shop for some supplies that I needed for school, the storm hit while I was at the mall, I had to drive home about 10 miles through the wind, at one point it picked my car up and moved it almost two lanes across the street, there were trees falling all around me but I was young and invinsible, (I was lucky), there was no warning, and the storm lasted from the first heavy rains till the end of the wind about 2 hours, there was no power anywhere, many bright flashes from trees hitting powerlines and transformers blowing, the next day was beautiful blue skies and warm, and for a week or so after that, it was the happening of a lifetime, and I was there...kpkp

kp,i remember that day vividly too.i was walking around downtown Newport and watched as signs was being ripped apart and blown down hiway 101,i went home to Nye Beach and walking toward our house a brick from the chimney just about hit me.i remember the house creaking with every big gust and rocking and a rolling figured it was going to go down.seeing the damage later it was a bit scary and worse yet seeing great big enormous trees toppled over like bowling pins.
the best thing on October 12 was in 1979 when my youngest girl was born.
