It's Junkin' Time in Waldmohr!!!

Ooooh, I LOVE this time in our village! For those that don't know what Junking is, twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall, everyone puts out everything and anything that doesn't fit into the proper catagories to throw out when we all recycle every time the trash goes out. People put out furniture, dishes, clothes, broken electronics, flower pots, everything! It is a week long process of dragging stuff out to the curb in front of the house and the stuff accumulating. At the end of the week, the city sends out trucks to pick up whatever is left - because the whole premise is if anyone sees anything they like in front of someone's house on the curb -- they just go and help themselves to it! It's like everyone has little free garage sales in front of their houses! It's WONDERFUL! Continued in first reply.

During the last Junkings, I have gotten a set of wooden outdoor furniture, and a giant area rug. Those things I am recycling this time because the Hubster is a bit picky about his junk, haha! I have also gotten a thick green glass ashtray that must weigh 3 pounds (I'm convinced that someday ashtrays will become collectible items as we all stop smoking like we did in the '50's) and a small table for beside my rocking chair. It looked terrible when I brought it home (as did the ashtray, gunked up with years of tar on it) but I scraped the old ugly paint off the top, and found a really pretty wooden pattern under the paint.

Ahhh, Autumn! when the leaves are turning, the days chilly and the nights cold, and I can go out for a walk and find Junking treasures on the street!

Below is a pic of my great table. I keep a small lace tablecloth on it to help protect it, but if it makes the move back to the states with us in one piece, I will give it a good coat of varnish. :)

well that is a beautiful table. im surprised, i have never heard of this in germany. in my little town, nothing like that happens. nothing at all. the stuff just goes away. i always thought it was a bit wasteful. but most germans wouldnt be caught dead using someone elses stuff.

of course here, we have it all the time.

I've never heard of this in Germany either, but it is a wonderful idea. Sort of like our internet recycling on freecycle.org or Craigslist. You found a beautiful table. A pearl amongst the stones - enjoy it!

The bigger villages don't do this anymore, because the junk on the street interferes with parking.

One day, we found the grossest thing while junking! It was an old wooden leg, with cracked leather straps and a carved foot! It was kind of interesting in an antique medical way, and I was going to pick it up when from inside the house it was laying in front of came a very bad sounding, sort of emphasemic cough. One of those kinds of coughs that you hope the person isn't dying on the spot. Eeeeew! I jerked my hand back from the artificial leg! No way was I touching it then! LOL

i cant believe you are talking about germany. even the garbage is clean and neat. i know in my town, no such thing would ever happen. i swear they wont hang the laundry out, unless its perfectly clean, not a speck. so actual yucky stuff on the side of the road, just doesnt sound like germany.

but you did indeed find a gem.

If the weather is nice tomorrow, I will take pics of the junk on the street. And you are right HM, no Germans go thru anyone's stuff! (But I sure do, ha!) As soon as junking starts (and I think it goes for a week - it has in the past) we will see a ton of white vans with no windows and Polish plates. Now, I'm not saying anything agains the Polish folks...but this is just what they do. They go to whatever village is having junking ('cause not all of them do it at the same time) and they take whatever they think they can refurbish and haul it back to Poland and sell it there.

that sounds about right. but im still surprised the germans leave it out at all. times are a changin, for sure.

The Germans I think are changing a little how they work this junking week. In the past, everything was out for a week, and especially if it rained, by the end of the week the entire village looked pretty sorry. Today (Tuesday, the 2nd day) a big truck came around and workers shovelled all of the junk on the streets into the truck. In the past, this everything junk truck only came at the very end of the week. I am thinking that they are sending out the everything junk truck twice during the week now, to keep it looking a little better. An update tomorrow! :)

now that sounds more like germany. and i bet the homeowners came out and swept the mess up after they left. right? some things never change.

It's sort of drizzling today, not a good day to walk around and hunt for cool junk, but I might walk a little anyway, just see what's out there. We put a big area rug outside last night and by this morning we noticed it was gone. It's kind of like Christmas, only in reverse, haha!
