My husband and I were there in May. It was sooooooooooooo beautiful. We went to Rome and Florence as well, and as amazing and special as they were, it was Venice that I went to Italy for. I was not disappointed! I loved it.

Venice is on my short-list, but I now have trouble walking long-distances, and even more trouble standing. Is Venice wheelchair friendly if I go in the off season? I'd soooo love to see.
Any advice?
Getting around in a wheelchair may be possible, but there are lots of bridges to cross over the Canals. Some have ramps (though steep), some lifts. Try this website for more information.

I would say that it is not an easy place if you have trouble walking. I don't think it's wheel-chair friendly. I was just exhausted walking around Italy. Of course, we were with a tour. If you go, don't go with a tour. Sometimes I think they are trying to kill us with all the walking! Maybe you can get a private tour guide (more expensive, of course) who would then go slower, and who would know where it was wheelchair accessible. It really is beautiful, but it seems to me that fewer places in the world think about the handicapped and elderly than I thought.
