There sure are a lot of interesting people on this website! I also love to take apart vintage pieces of jewelry and remake them into something new and beautiful. Years ago, I was a buyer for an antique clothing store and, in those days, I took apart the vintage dresses that weren't wearable (either because of style or size) and used the fabric to make new clothes with. Right now, I don't really have an organized place to do my arts and crafts, but I'm working on it. :):)
I agree with you, and hope the site grows..it is nice to have our own age group. Good luck on getting a work place set up, it is a real challenge. Utilizing antique fabrics and jewelry would be a fabulous niche for you. Do you sell any or make it for yourself and friends?
I haven't made too many things recently because of lack of a good work space, but I did it for a living, for many years. I think a lot of us who designed or did custom work for boutiques stopped, due to manufacturing overseas and people being unwilling to pay for it. It's only been recently that interest in beautiful clothing and jewelry has re-emerged, after so many years of women wearing either baggy formless clothes or female versions of mens' suits to work. Thank goodness for that, for esthetics reasons, if nothing else.
Oh, I forgot to ask! Are you selling your items or giving them as gifts, uncorked? Where are you finding your old pieces? I bought a few antique strings of beads off Ebay, a few years ago, but it seems like everybody and her sister is onto it, now, and they get bid up. The competition shouldn't intimidate anyone, though, because a lot of them are making things that just look like more cheap junk to me, there's an art to it. ;) I guess our conversation has drifted to making things, rather than collecting, but we can do both.
I have been collecting for many years and I agree ebay is not that great anymore for buying, the best ones are too high. I will splurge every now and then when it is a fabulous piece. Mostly I look for lots or single pieces at antique stores or junk shops when I am lucky enough to find them. I do sell some of them, but hate to part with most of them too. Also, I have inherited a few really wonderful pins, and cool rhinestone pieces, and my friends know I love it so I have bought some from them.
I'll bet your friends appreciate that! I've been more interested in collecting old beads and would like to get more at some point. We don't have places to find nice vintage pieces around here, like we did in some other areas I lived in. People don't donate or part with those items or else the volunteers who work at the thrift stores snatch them up for a song before they get out on the shelves. Now that Ebay is up and running, they know they can make money from them for their own selves, I guess. Times have changed. :)
