It's Been A Long Haul!

Howdy Folks!

Having spent the major part of the summer trekking my RV from Berea, KY to the south, turning right to avoid the heat and humidity of Florida. Skimmed the southern borders of most of the far south states, and finally landed in San Diego. Spent some time at an "RV Resort", which turned out to be mostly "trailer trash", and left there to find another spot that was cleaner, safer, and didn't charge for water used, electric used, and the manager knew the police by their first names! Found, by chance, a WONDERFUL......and REAL.......RV Resort in Bakersfield. Yup, and the name of it is the Bakersfield RV Resort. No one would ever think that in Bakersfield there would be anything but dust and heat. It has to be the Mother-of-all-RV Resorts, and I would suggest that if you are up that way, don't go past there without looking at this gorgeous place. Tell me what you think after you've seen it, ok?

Onward up I-5, although I really wanted to go the coast route, but the forest fires changed my planes. It wasn't too bad, and when I reached Oregon, I felt it was well worth it. What a wonderful state........so green, beautiful trees, clean parks, wonderful highways.......never knew how truly lovely this country is until you are face-to-face with the beauty. How many times had I flown over the US without ever stopping to smell the air, and now I'm actually doing IT!

On to Seattle to say hello to my son and family. Unfortunately, I found out that my son had orders for Deployment to Iraq............no he wasn't National Guard........they chose him because he was in the Army 17 years ago as security/police, and had done his required tours. Now,with a family and working for the railroad, he is suddenly pulled away at 42 years old, and sent to a country that knows no right or wrong. I was...and am....totally devastated! Any mother will tell you how heart-wrenching this would be...and I suffer for his safety.

Continuing my RV trip, I have a schedule to be in Montreal by the 14th of September to work on the Press Corps for a Global Congress on the treatment and research for MS. This is a great opportunity for me, and I was so excited about driving across the top of the US to Montreal. Unfortunately, my spirits were dampened by my sons' news, but I knew it would take about 2 weeks to drive 3000 miles. Sure enough, going over the Peace Bridge in Detroit holding my breath the whole way, I made it to the other side without a nose bleed. I remembered my Passport, vehicle registration, and Insurance card, so I thought I was all set. Lots of questions why my RV had a Mainland address with Hawaii plates! As a resident of Hawaii, I can get plates for the RV a lot cheaper than most anywhere in the states!

Will be staying the night at a Provincial Park (State Park), and this is so beautiful here...to bad I can't squeeze in 2 days here! Guess I'd better not.......off and running tomorrow bright and early to make it on time in Montreal. More of the story to be told at a later date.

Hello My RV Friends!

AH, MONTREAL! What a gorgeous city! But, you have never in your life seen such a traffic mess.......if the freeways were ever clear, the road construction folks would find where everybody travels, and close down 2 of the 3 lanes. That's how it is! If you were to compare the economy of Canada to the economy of the US, there would be an enormous gap. The reason I make that statement is the construction industry is alive and well. It's just amazing to see the number of new townhouses......row after row.......painted in clean soft hues......lawns manicured, abundant flowers, trees pruned......all a la England or New Zealand. In this oh-so-French area, there are virtually no signs in English......storefront or street......and anybody driving in the Providence of Quebec had better be able to read French.....well!

Nevertheless, let me tell you where I parked my RV for 10 days: A delightful oasis in the middle of the city, gated campground, beautiful trees, fountained pond with ducks and geese, landscaped lanes with pull-in parking, and a table picnic area at each site. The low-key elegance goes with the name....Parc Mont Laval. Unfortunately, the heated pool was closed as the school session had started, and the Lifequards are students. That's the Law...no lifeguard, no pool.

Because I decided long ago not to have a tow vehicle.......how many times do I back-up in a day???.......I rented a car for my meetings in Montreal. Deciding to find the Metro for the Park-and-Ride, it was easier to follow the dismantled traffic into the city than take the bus and train. Honestly, I have to pat myself on the back for having made that trip at least 5 times, and getting lost only once! Don't ever let anybody tell you a GPS couldn't find its' way out of a paper bag. Mine let me down a couple times, but I realized it couldn't speak French either!

The last day, and I'm pulling in the awnings, checking the tires, putting my electric, 3-wheeled scooter, on the rack in the back, and finishing all the chores necessary for a trip across the border into the US. Same scenario at this crossing...they asked all the questions, and then the Agent wanted to come in the RV. Realize please, I do not fit any profiles, I have no illicit drugs, alcohol, contraband, guns, etc. in my possession, and they still wanted permission to enter my RV! She looked around, didn't open any drawers, look at any books, but did open the fridge for a second, and closed it right away. As she was leaving, she mentioned that I had a beautiful coach. How quaint!

Heading out of Canada into Vermont, I wanted to see the brilliant colors of Fall. My trip was 2 weeks too early as the summer was too warm, and too dry. What a disappointment. Arrived at my destination in Bristol, New York early in the evening, and found the park where I'll be setting up camp. If one ever wanted to see Up-State New York in the Canandaigua Lake area, come in the Fall. It is so beautiful, even though there are only a few red trees scattered around the high hills, this campground is smack in the middle of the woods. Bristol Woodland Campground is fabulous for scenery. Although situated on the other side of the mountain from the lake, it maintains remote features, with only the rustle of the trees at night.

I will leave here in about 3 days, heading south. Starting in Kentucky, I will stop to see my friends, get my coach checked over, and then......well, I really don't know.......

Until we meet again......
