We know alll the correct procedures and how to go through the drill, so to speak. Others see what they think is a functioning, living profile that is saying and doing the right things at the right time. Actually, it is just an outline or representation of what is perceived to be real. They do not realize they are looking at a mere shadow or vague image. This can be so deceiving. We have learned to be great pretenders. It is not that we intentionally practice deception in order to hurt others, but we do it to protect ourselves. We think we can keep our sanity by acting like a little girl playing house. Many times, it is a ploy we use to keep the proverbial wolf away from our door. (Introduction, pg. Xiii)
