Ideal Political Leadership Characteristics

Remember that this is a political free zone so we will not discuss candidates or name names.

Some things pop to mind when I think about leadership characteristics. Honesty, intelligence, communication skills, experience, foreign policy expertise, skills at leading large organizations, health, age, ability to cross the isle, past performance as measured by voting history, education, etc. etc. Add any other characteristics that you think are important.

But, here is the exercise. Which leadership characteristics are most important to you and how would you rank order them? Consider the top one on your list as the most important followed by those of lesser importance. Remember that this is a political free zone.

Well, I would at least add a knowledge of economics combined with compassion to your list.

Intelligence I would have to move to the top of the list. Without it one would not be able to grasp anything. Workable knowledge would be good but I for one, would not expect one to know absolutely everything about everything entailed in running a government the size of ours that's why there are experts.

The willingness to listen and really hear what is being said is applicable to everything from foreign relations to the economy.

Honesty is important. However, I am not interested in their private lives. I don't care who smoked dope, binged drank in college, who is screwing whomever. That tells me nothing about their ability to lead and needs to stay private.

These are my top three.

Two Spirits, Thanks. You are the only one to really answer the question so far. What I am after from you guys are the traits that you think are most important and how would you rank them from the most important to the least important.

Which leadership characteristics are most important?

In this country?

1) Swift Boating
2) Negative campaigning
3) Well-disguised Flip Flopping
4) Short-term memory loss

There is really only one answer to your question. None of them. Period.

Our politicial process makes any characteric a leader might or might not pocess useless, so they are all self serving.

They have to get elected. In order to win your vote, they will demonstrate whatever characteristics you want in a leader. They'll tell you what you want to hear. Once they are elected they know that if they do something one way or another they will lose votes. They want to keep their elected position so they do nothing other then self service. That way they don't lose any votes.

Look at their pay, health coverage, and retirement they 've given themselves as compare to the rest of the country. It's as though they've put their middle finger up and said F-you to the rest of us.

Shame really as so much need to be done, but isn't getting done.

the most important characteristics are vision and the ability to enunciate those visions and lead us to them.

Quest…with regard to your specific question, my list is very short. Here it is, prioritized:

1) Integrity.
2) Intellegence.
3) An intention to be both helpful and harmless.

I know, it does not include what I would add to your list, but that was my recommended addition to YOUR list – not my list.
