Getting the word out

Last week I told about my book and now I need advice. I have been trying to market it but that is going slow. If you have any ideas or things that have worked for you please let me know. My goal is to get it into as many caregivers hands as possible. So far I have joined Alzheimer's and caregiver groups on line. I have contacted the Alzheimer's Association and Alzheimer's Foundation. I have also contacted senior centers in the area and will give a talk there in Sept. The book is called "Reflections for a Caregiver" and is on Amazon.com Thanks

have you gone to rehab and hospitals? There are a few websites where you can post the info on your book that are free. Are in writers web on eons? If so you can post your book cover and buying info in the new Eons Book Gallery. if you already have, try authornation.com. They also post advice. I get Parapublishing newsletter. You can also post there.

Congratulations! Now, to get your book to sell, you have to think bigger! The fact that your book is non-fiction is a great plus! It makes you an "authority" in the caregiving business. Radio and TV stations from coast to coast in this country are all seeking to fill news and talk shows with people that can talk intelligently on a subject that would interest their audiences. As well as national magazines.

A well-written letter and a copy of your book to most program directors will get you on the radio and TV. But, it's going to cost you. Since you're published by an on-demand printer, your books are going to cost you a lot each. I suspect as much as twelve or thirteen dollars each. Then, to mail that book will cost another $5.00 each (do not use Media Mail or Library Rates with the Post Office unless you are okay with 20-30% of them never showing up at the other end...nor being returned.)

Better yet, something cheaper: if you wrote 1000-3000 word articles that were accepted by magazines that deal with your subject, then you will see your sales increase.

You biggest problem is that your book can only be sold by Amazon. And while they are a major book seller, Books stores, libraries, and distributors will not be buying from there.

You best bet on this book is to use it to establish your credentials as best you can, then consider alternative publishing the next time that does not prevent wide-spread availibility.

You might be able to place an ad in your local papers or even contact some State Health Departments, offer to donate books to them. Sometimes in marketing as in charity work, you give away a little and get a lot more in return.

Jaquel- I have never heard of a Print-on-Demand printer. Did you mean Print-on-Demand publisher? One of my books was done by Infinity Publishing, A POD publisher and my books cost me 8.97 each and sell retail for 14.95. Maybe it is a different size and page count than Jopat's and then it would cost more. I get the same 40 percent discount from Infinity as bookstores, and then I get another 10 percent royalty on top of that if my book is sold at retail. My book can be sold anywhere by any online bookstore or ordered by any "brick and Mortar" bookstore or ordered from infinity.

Platform5, you bring up some interesting points. And yes, I did mean Pring-On-Demand Publisher instead of printer. However, in the case of Jopat, whose POD is Amazon, how many bookstores do you suspect are going to order books from Amazon to resell?

Bookstores deal with distributors, and prefer to deal with only one or two. Book-A-Million will only buy from their own distributing company (which they own.) Distributors (so they say) will not order from a POD. So, that means those bookstores you speak of would have to 1) somehow find out about your book, 2) really want that book badly, 3) order directly from your POD.

Imagine a bookstore that orders books on a weekly basis ordering 1 or 2 copies of 500 titles from 500 different publishers. They want 1 shipment a week from 1 wholesaler with 1 invoice. Keep it simple. However, some might possibly be able to order it should someone ask for it. Check with your favorite bookstore and ask them if they can do that.
