Flying with Puppy in coach.

I picked up my daughter's new puppy Friday night. The cutest little ball of Cocker Spaniel fur! She is just a sweetie pie. I put a crate next to my bed and she has slept through the night both nights. I think she's gonna be a great dog. My daughter is 31, she is flying out from California to pick her up next weekend and I can't wait. She will be flying back with the pup in the plane with a carry on. I can't believe the airline is charging $80 for a "carry on". Is the pup getting the best peanuts or what? What's up with the fee? Anyone out there in travel and know why they charge for this?

I've never flown with a dog as a carry on - until I got poms, they weren't small enough to fit under the seat. I'll check with some of my other friends that show and travel more with their dogs.

Since the carrier has to be small enough to go under the seat, that seems pretty expensive!!

I fly with one of my small dogs in cabin often. Each airline charges different rates: American charges $80 each way; Delta $50. Not sure about the others. I agree that the fee is outrageous. It's not lilke the airline is doing anything special to accommodate your dog.

I checked with some pom breeder/exhibitor friends and this is their response.

"You have to pay $80-$100 each way when flying. I got
my Holly and had to stand at the desk and get checked
in there with her and I had to pay the $80 at the
desk, not ahead of time. I don't know if different
airlines do it differently. I flew with US Airways."

Guess that is standard procedure. Last time I shipped a dog, it was a sheltie, and it had to go in cargo - cost me $150 one way and that was at least 18 years ago so $80-100 to have the dog safe in the cabin with its owner isn't a bad deal IMO. A lot safer for the dog.

The cost is one thing, if they were doing anything with the animal. They are not. Kristi carries it on, stashes her under the seat during take off and then can't take the dog out of the carry on during the whole flight, which is okay I guess. Just seems like another way for them to make money. I took her all over Sunday to get used to the carrier, she seems to like it.
