Welcome here? Yashuryoobetcha!

Minnesota is unlike any place I've ever lived, and it deserves to have its many fine features, attractions and events showcased. The weather is by turns almost unbearably harsh and then, for the briefest blink of time, a sportsman's dream, the countryside is unspoiled and a delight to the senses, the cities are cosmopolitan and culturally diverse, and the people... oh, how much can and will be said about the people!
Join us, please, and help us fill these pages with your photographs, experiences, and observations! And take the time, too, to visit Explore Minnesota to learn about the festivals and events currently offered in our great state! Perhaps we'll see you at one of them!

Back from the Wild
I am back after 5 days in Voyageur's National Park. If you look on the map of Minnesota and find International Falls, you will see the park. There is no cell service, we were without TV, and it was peaceful, quiet, and beautiful. We stayed in a cabin just outside the park and boated in each day to a water world of wilderness and beauty. We saw Eagles and their juveniles learning to fly, groups of deer, and water, water everywhere. Beautiful pines, granite outcroppings, and we actually caught fish for dinner.
There was another resort with an outdoor bar with chairs facing the Ash River, where I could enjoy my favorite beverage and watch the boats going in and out of the park.
At the resort they had a variety of the "old orange" daylily tht was very old but unique. Instead of just orange, it was orange and with deeper shade of orange ruffle within. I have never seen just a beautiful "old, wild" daylily.
Coming home, we harvested 4" diameter and 8" to 12" long cucumbers which grew in the 6 days we were gone. The greatest one was the "double," which obviously grew together and looked like...in my daughter's words ... the cucumber version of the Ten Commandments. We brought about 25 lbs to a family gathering yesterday, and secretly left the remainder with our hostess. But my son, who purchased a whole share of an organic garden program, also brought goodies to give away, so I didn't feel quite so bad. He locked his car so I couldn't sneak any cucumbers.
The sweet corn held, and is still ripening, so we didn't miss the whole crop, as we feared.
It's fun to be back in civilization and looking foward to other jouneys into the wilderness.

I did make the Ren Fest, finally!
I'd hoped to see my friend Steven at the Renaissance Festival today - he performs with the Court Revelers - but it wasn't to be. He's temporarily on hiatus due to a foot injury, as I learned after I made some phone calls. Still, they were wonderful. The whole experience was wonderful.
If you're a people watcher, the Renaissance Festival will give you your fix for the whole year, I guarantee it. I saw a bagpiper in full Scottish regalia - wearing, as it turned out, Nike socks. I saw an almost otherworldly young beauty playing the hammer dulcimer, all decked out in medieval costuming - authentic except for the facial piercings, which somehow still suited her, something I never would have expected to hear myself say. I heard a flower vendor tell the man behind us that his companion was a beauty, and he should buy her a rose. The man responded, "Naw, she's already got flowers up da ass."
Ah, romance!
It was an excellent time, and I did a lot of walking and a lot of sampling of the hard cider and the mead. Someone had to do it; it might as well have been me. And all I bought was some essential rose oil mixed with civet - much less expensive than the BPAL I usually buy.
I'd like to go back again late in September when they have the Italian weekend - maybe we can make it a group thing??

I never made the Ren Fest
I closed Thursday night, and didn't get home until after 10:30. I didn't get home until after 8:30 Friday night, because of staff shortages (and the owners were up north). I closed Saturday night too, which meant I had only one day to enjoy with my husband. Then someone called in sick yesterday morning, and I wound up working from opening till closing. I'm just about to head in again.
I've had it. Seriously, if you're looking for a worker, and are willing to compensate according to what that worker is worth, I'm all yours.

MN State Fair!
It is that time of year! Woohoo...State Fair! How many of you plan on going to the fair this year? I know some who go not once, not twice...but several times. What is your favorite fair food or memory? I just love the State Fair aroma and atmosphere, love to people watch and walk until I can't walk anymore.
If you are retired .....
What do you do all day?
I've got this 40+ year pattern that I'm trying to break!
That pattern is work in the morning (as if I've gone to work), lay back in the afternoon, and work at night. If I go on errands, when I get back to house, it's like "oops, it's break time...as if it were a Saturday."
I can't break the 40-year old "work/Saturday" pattern, so my mind runs a tape of ..."You aren't doing enough." Which is respond to with ..."Mind your own business."
It's not that we aren't busy, which in itself, was a surprise! I think I thought I would have endless hours to learn new hobbies, save the world, etc., and I find I can hardly keep up with the limited volunteer events I've committed to.

Fishing for the Cure - Part II
Yes!
The pink rod and reel is mine! The reel is pink/black/and silver. Wait until the whopper hits that puppy -- Killer angler on the loose!

Ren Fest
The Ren Fest starts this weekend! I know Allen is going to want to take the boat out on Sunday. And I know I'm going to win the ensuing contest of wills!
