Inner Beauty by ScottQMarcus

The Chamber of Deputies, France's lower house of parliament, recently adopted a bill making it illegal for anyone to "incite extreme thinness;" the latest and strongest of a series of measures proposed in the wake of a 2006 anorexia-linked death of a Brazilian model. The legislation would allow sanctions against those responsible for a magazine photo of a model whose "thinness altered her health." Two years ago, a Spanish ban proclaimed that models with a body mass index - BMI - under 18 would not be allowed on the runway. (As comparison, the average American woman is 5' 4" and weighs 140, ...

WELCOME! LET'S GET HEALTHY AND LOSE WEIGHT!
Why does losing weight become a much more difficult task as we grow older? The formula remains the same - food in, energy out and 3500 calories equals one pound. Exactly the same as it was when we were 18, 25, or 40. What is changing, for many of us, is our lifestyle, our metabolism and our overall health. Injury, physical ailments, and medications can all affect how our body uses what we eat.
Surviving half a century doesn't mean our bodies have to look or feel like that lumpy old antique sofa in the second-hand shop down the street. We can lose the extra weight, improve our health and overall quality of life along the way.
We don't need expensive celebrity endorsed, overpriced meals in boxes, supposed miracle pills or fancy gadgets. We need a sound, sensible, sustainable diet combined with daily activity, it really is that simple.
Sure, it takes changes in our daily behavior, the choices we make at the grocery store and the ones we make standing in front of the refrigerator. They aren't difficult changes, most are quite simple. The difficult part comes in making the commitment to eat healthy to give your body the nutrition it needs to age well and to remain active.
Talking to your Doctor
It is important that you discuss your weight loss plans with your physician for many reasons. The most important, your health and well-being. Your doctor may want to monitor your progress for several reasons - To keep track of your blood pressure, your heart rate, your blood counts. Weight loss can affect all of these. If you take medications, it's even more important your doctor be kept informed.
This goes for the exercise, too. If you have any physical limitations, please, check with your medical professional before trying any new exercises or programs.
I highly recommend that you all visit our sister recipe group Slim Pickins for healthy recipes and more nutritional tips. view link

Hello, again...and update!
Glad you're all here!
Just reconnected with Eons and certainly could use support on the journed to 130! (ounds, that is. I don't expect that to be my age in this incarnation.) Ideal weight? I don't know what the gurus say, but it'll work for me.
There's so much more to weight loss than counting calories...I have lots of info on what our food supply does to us, sensitivities to look out for, and other myth de-bunkers. I look forward to sharing...
A Fast Food Junkie...

"Both the sugar and the fat (from fast foods) evoke brain chemicals called beta-endorphin and dopamine, which are also activated by heroin and cocaine." Says, Kathleen Desmaisons, PhD. The smell of sugar and fried foods incites pleasure chemicals in the brain, the same chemical fix we got from eating these things.
"After their meals, people feel happy and satisfied. Later, their insulin levels crash, and teir mood drops. They crave more of the same fat and sugar laden foods, and they only feel better once they eat them. The world is bright until the effect wears off. Then people feel grumpy and hopeless, and inadequate until they have more."
I was a fast food junkie...no more.
From 350+ lbs to 185 lbs
Until 2 years ago, most of her life, she was morbidly obese.
Her brother lost lots of weight and this motivated her to start.
She focused on fresh fruits, veggies, lean meats, whole grains and plenty of other healthy food. She researched the internet daily for new helpful info. Gradually, she was able to start moving more and more.
In her interview, she said the one important key was blogging daily. Being incredibly honest with her good days and bad ones. She took pictures along the way and posted those.
If my math is right, she averaged a 7 lb loss per month.
Tried to find a link to the interview or to her blog, but can't.
If someone that young could be patient with 7 lbs gone each month, I see that as a great lesson for those of us older who have to realize that it gets harder to lose weight.
Detoxing...start of a healthier life..
