What is a "Weather Weenie"? Doesn't sound very complimentary, does it? Surprisingly, in the world of meteorologists, a weather weenie is generally a highly regarded person.
Weather weenie is a nickname used to describe a person who is deeply fascinated by weather. Variant terms are "weather nerd" and "weather geek." According to some of the UW meteorologists we interviewed, a weather weenie is distinguished by an interest in weather that borders on obsession. Weather weenies would rather talk about weather than anything else. Weather weenies watch the sky when outside or study satellite images of storms when inside. Weather weenies' favorite channel is The Weather Channel and they have their television tuned to it twenty-four hours a day. Whether weather weenie are adventurous storm chasers or studious mathematicians, they are united by their passion for weather.
While most weather weenies have jobs relating to weather, a person who has a job in another field can still be a weather weenie if their love and knowledge of weather is sufficiently enthusiastic and single-minded. The magazine Weatherwise is a popular periodical geared toward these type of weather lovers--non-professional and non-scientist weather weenies.
While the term "weather weenie" may have, at one time, had negative connotations, today the nickname is taken as a compliment. Weather weenies around the world have embraced the name and accept it as their own, just as Wisconsinites have embraced the somewhat derogatory term, "Cheesehead."
According to one weather scientist, to be called a weather weenie by another weather weenie is the highest compliment a weather weenie can receive. Having the nickname applied to you can be a type of rite of passage into this extreme group of meteorologists.

Central Florida Friday/Smoke!
For Florida you can pretty much use the same forecast every day! Highs today to reach low 90's. Pressure still high; humidity low. Now we have a breeze from the west blowing the wildfire smoke down into the more densely populated areas to the south and east. Miami/Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach now have a health watch due to smoke. Areas far south have the added "bonus" of a fire burning in the Everglades. This is already an ecologically threatened area as you all probably know. The Everglades has been reduced by half in area due to poor water management and overbuilding. We have lost 90% of the wading and migratory birds in that fragile eco-system. The Lake Okeechobee fire will burn for months due to the nature of the lake bottom. It is virtually a peat bog and the fire cannot be put out until it burns out on its own. So, what man has not managed to destroy the drought conditions provided by Mother Nature seem to be taking care of. A few more years of ice and glacier melting and coastal Florida will be restored to its former glory: as prime swampland!
Beautiful Spring Day in Michigan
Today was just a great day to get outdoors and do whatever.
I had to work so didn't get to enjoy much of it. We had a high of 70F late this afternoon with light winds. More light rain is expected tonight with a low of around 50F. In the next few days we are looking for more below normal temps with highs only in the upper 50's and low 60's. Our whole month of May has been like this. In April we were above normal most of the month so now we're paying for it. Tomorrow is expected to be wet and windy with gust up to 35mph. Sunday will be about the same. No more nice weather until Monday.

Weird Weather
Sacramento CA: We are having the strangest weather, close to 100 degree temperatures and a BIG wind. Been going on for a few days now. I came to Sac from a cooler climate, the SF Bay Area, mild and cool, and each Spring now I have to get adjusted all over again to the heat. But this is just plain weird. The winds are not a part of the heat picture, usually. I work at a public library with a small but very bright staff. I asked one co-worker what was causing the winds, in his opinion. "Oh, those are the sirocco winds, they come off the desert in Africa." So I asked "And how do they get here?" - He said he didn't know. ha ha. He is always quick with a quip. See, to me this is funny. I am always watching the sky, the trees moving in the wind, and registering the changes in the humidity. Come to find out, so are many others. I thought I was the only weather nerd I knew, but there are numerous such sensitive and refined people about. (smile) - That would include you, right? Have a great day, and let it be just the right weather for YOU.
