PHENOMENAL WOMEN

PHENOMENAL WOMEN (PW) has been created for all Women. PW is a group where we can be strong, vital, and opinionated, and where we can celebrate our diversity of race, spiritual beliefs, and political thoughts.

It is a place where our sexuality is as important as our intellect, and where opinions are valued, and our varied tastes are shared.

Getting Babies

I read another story today about a woman cutting a baby from the stomach of another woman and killing her. It seems that this practice is becoming quite "common". I remember when a movie came out about this some years ago ,I think Kate Jackson played the killer/stealer. I thought it was horrible to even make a movie like that. It seems as if the practice of stealing a baby has caught on,it happened near me in East St Louis about a year or so ago the killer took her friends baby and killed her other children -so horrible. I do not even like the sight of blood I do not understand how someone can do something so gross. Do any of you think television or the media influenced this "trend" to get a baby-I do.

Sundays are for

Whether it's reading the New York times in bed or going to church, we seem to have Sunday routines. Mine is attending that hotbed of liberalism and inclusivity, a Unitarian Universalist Church, then out to brunch with friends.

Do you sleep in and relax or ?????

Garage Sales

Do you go to garage sales ? Does your town have good garage sales ,if you do what are/were some of your favorite finds? I love garage sales have for years but I do not go so often now unless it starts really early I can't take the extreme heat anymore. One of my best finds was when my grand daughter was small I got a complete Disney book and movie collection for $10 both were in excellent shape.

Down Sizing

Talking about Garage sales, how many of you find that since you are retiring or it maybe that you just want to down size on furniture. I know I will be relocating next year, but I find myself getting rid of things that I have not used in years, and probably will never use. I like the basket ideas for putting my things away in, and the plastic bins where I can see and label them in my closets. BUt I think the down sizing for not needing all the excess furniture that holds clutter. What about you?

A PHONOMENAL WOMAN

Remembering The Trailblazer - Shirley Chisholm

All this talk of Democrats veering to the right, whining Americans and clipping people's gnads has given me pause and made me yearn for a time when the political process actually meant hope (forgive my cynicism) for black people.

If you're too young to remember, check out this video of a sister who had more cojones than all the political candidates running today put together. I can't help but smile when I think of her and I can't help but wonder if I was born a generation too late.

Too bad Shirley Chisholm left us too soon and is not around to see this historic moment today.

In fact, go out and get a copy of director Shola Lynch's documentary Chisholm '72: Unbought and Unbossed. Yes these are different times, which call for different measures. But through the documentary you could see back then what it meant to be part of a political bloc.

AKA BARBIE

July 7, 2008

BY CHERYL V. JACKSON cjackson@suntimes.com
The women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority really know how to get dolled up -- and focus on business.

They'll show that this week when they hit Washington, D.C., about 35,000 strong, for their biennial convention and get a look at one of their newest members: Barbie.

Mattel Inc. created the limited-edition Alpha Kappa Alpha Centennial Barbie, the first Barbie based on any sorority. The doll honors the Chicago-headquartered sorority, the first established by black women.

Mattel Inc. created the limited-edition AKA Centennial Barbie, the first Barbie based on any sorority.

The doll, outfitted in a pink and green evening gown, matching jeweled shoes and gold jewelry, honors the Chicago-headquartered sorority, the first established by black women.

The sorority has inducted about 200,000 members -- including actress Phylicia Rashad, educator Marva Collins and author Toni Morrison -- since its founding at Howard University in 1908.

The AKA Barbie has some company. Another business, the Sisterhood Boutique, last year modeled a collectible doll on the sorority. That creation made its way into official gift bags for celebrity presenters at the Grammy Awards in February

Would you tell?

If you saw your best friend's man out with another woman and it obviously is not a platonic relationship...would you tell your friend? Would you make sure that he knew that you saw him?
