Drag up a cheer..................

And set a spell..............

For Southerners, that is not an uncommon saying, unless you are maybe in So Cal.....

It means: You are welcome here, come talk with us, learn about us and let us learn about you.....

Maybe our language is peculiar to some, that is OK.....

We are home folks.....you come in here, expect to be considered family.....

That also means: No personal attacks ever at all.....disagree, OK.....but be nice about it.....

If you can handle being part of the family, come on in......

Favorite Southern authors..

I have always enjoyed reading and thank my parents for planting that seed. I read all kinds of things, whatever interests me, but hold a special place in my heart for Southern authors. Some of my favorites are Larry McMurtry (his "Lonesome Dove" is a true classic), the late Lewis Grizzard (his humorous books with titles such as "Elvis is Dead, and I Don't Feel So Good Myself," will live forever), Pat Conroy, Dorothea Benton Frank (who was born here in the Charleston area and still has a home here), and Harper Lee. Who are your favorites?

Was TR (Teddy Roosevelt) a Southerner?

Here's what TR said when he visited his mother's home in Georgia.

Speaking in Roswell, GA, 1905:
"It has been my great fortune to have the right to claim that my blood is half Southern and half Northern, and I would deny the right of any man here to feel a greater pride in the deeds of every Southern man than I feel. Of the children, the brothers and sisters of my mother who were born and brought up in that house on the hill there, my two uncles afterwards entered the Confederate service and served in the Confederate navy. One, the youngest man was my uncle, Irving Bulloch. James Dunwoody Bulloch was an admiral in the Confederate service. ... Men and women, don't you think that I have the ancestral right to claim a proud kinship with those who showed their devotion to duty as they saw they duty, whether they wore the gray or whether they wore the blue? All Americans who are worthy of the name feel an equal pride in the valor of those who fought on one side or the other, provided only that each did with all his might and soul and strength and mind his duty as it was given him to see his duty."

How do you say "pecan"?

Do you pronounce it "pee kahn" or "pee can"? I say both. Growing up my family that lived in the country said "pee can" and my family in the city said "pee kahn". My husband says a real Southerner says "pee can". LOL What do you say?

The Working Poor

I live in Georgia. On the local news last night, they reported that, there are 75,000 homeless people in Georgia. They also said if your rent or mortgage takes up half or more of your income, it is very likely you could become homeless. I find this very disturbing. My husband and I fall into this category. My husband works his butt off and I am not able to work because of my health. Our car just died and his commute to work and back takes him 4 hours a day. We have given up all luxuries, no eating out, we shop at the cheapest stores and go without health care. We are trying to consolidate our bills. Not only is the stress of this making us sick it is embarrassing. People treat you like it is your fault you are poor. So called friends avoid us because we can no longer lead the lifestyle they do. I thought about not writing this because it is embarrassing and demeaning. But I know I am not alone. I think it is time people forgot about keeping up with the Jones and started having more compassion for those less fortunate. We have helped people as much as we can in the past and still do. My wish is that when you realize a friend is in trouble help them. Only if it is a shoulder to cry on. Do not smile and say I know everything will be OK. You do not know that and it is insulting to have your situation minimized just because it makes you uncomfortable. I am in no way asking for help. I just wanted to give advice on how to help and comfort those in this situation. If things do not change in this country, this will affect more people. What next, will they reinstate The Poor House. Thank you for listening.
