Solo Traveling

Single or solo travelers sharing experiences, tips, information, web sites.

So, what's in a name?

So, what’s in a name? Think about it, most sane individuals would say names typically denote individuality, ownership, personality, background, and respect. However, those qualities don’t always come to mind when traveling. My point being, and everybody’s seen them on maps and while traveling throughout the United States, those towns, communities, roads, and landmark names that catch your eye, make one gasp, initiate blushing giggles, or intensely tickle the funny bone. Regardless of traveling past, through, on, or selected as a unique destination, the first question that arises after the tears of laughter, the “Oh, my Goodness,” and “How stupid,” responses, are why the name was selected in the first place, and for whatever reason why the heck was it never changed?

I’m sure there are wonderfully... CONTINUED IN REPLY...

Little steps - for now

Well - I still haven't made a BIG step towards a trip I want to make to Prague to see my grandson who is living there. My youngest daughter is expecting her 3d child in the next month, so, I be staying close to home for awhile.

BUT...I did take a little trip, just for a day on 8/3. I went alone with a tour group to Block Island, R.I. In all the years I've lived on Long Island, I've never been there. I signed up for it about 6 weeks before & the date finally arrived. A bus brought us to Montauk Point, L.I., N.Y. from where we borded a high speed ferry. It was an hour on the water. We were then given a tour of Block Island for an hour & then had a lovely 3 course lunch on a wrap around porch of an old hotel overlooking all the activity of the harbor. I sat with people I don't know & will never meet again but the conversation was very pleasent & cordial. After lunch we had a chance to walk around & shop if we chose to before being taken back to where the ferry brought us back to Long Island.

I met & had conversations with quite a few people who were on the same tour that I was on, so even though I was alone, the people I met & spoke to helped to make the day even more interesting.

It all just proved to me once again that taking the initiative & "JUST DOING IT" opens up great experiences & opportunities to meet people one wouldn't have met otherwise .

Incidentally, the weather was absolutely PERFECT & mild, dry & spectacularly clear. I took a lot of photos. Even though it turned out to be a VERY long day (5:30 a.m. rising to 8:45 p.m. returning home) It was a WONDERFUL day !

Going It Alone

I've been traveling solo for quite a while now. My husband is ill and has never really enjoyed travelling so if I want to travel it's solo or with a friend. I don't mind travelling alone but when you see something spectacular it's so much better to share it with someone. So....if you are looking for a travel companion keep me in mind. I'd love to plan a new adventure.

Ready to Go

I am sixty and single. I love to travel, however I am afraid to go alone at my age. Please let me know if you are a female in the same situation. I would love to meet someone who is in my situation. I am an African-American female from New Orleans, and as you already know it gets kind of depressing looking at the blight and decay since Katrina. I just need to get away some weekends for a short trip to break up the monotony.

Scotland Alone

I quite often travel and Scotland, particularly the north, is my favorite destination. I book my first night stay at a small bed & breakfast. When I am rested up, I am away on the train for Inverness.

I take 2 t-shirts, 2 pants, underwear, socks, small ziplock bags, a face cloth, small container of baby powder, soothing foot cream, etc. I use the power and cream at night and this makes them able to stand the next day's wanderings.

I roll my clothes so that they don't wrinkle as badly and I pack a wheelie bag inside the small, light suitcase which has wheels. I sometimes buy new clothes and keep my stuff light. If possible, I will check my bags into a station locker but if there are none, I have been known to ask a local pub if they could keep it there for me. No one has refused my request.

I only take what I need for the night and off I go in search of a nice bed and breakfast. This is one of my favorite things to do...go off hunting up a room. I have found some pretty great ones.

If I like a small town, I will book a room for about 3 days and just wander around shopping and taking photos and such. I sometimes travel on bus or train to a nearby city or two.

I am blessed with an internal sense of where I am and how to get back to where I was. I never seem to get lost, even in places like Venice, Italy with all of it's mini bridges and canals.

By the last day of my trip, I will have the suitcase and wheelie bag full. I arrive home tired but happy with my photos and trip diary preserving my trip forever.

Looking for travel companions for East Coast Trip

Hi,

Looking for some travel companions for a nine night trip to the East coast. I am on the West Coast but can have anyone join us.

Arriving in NYC on Oct. 16th in the am, visiting all the tourist spots, a broadway show, restaurants, Sex & the City tour, Ground Zero and everything I can see in 3 days.

Then to Cape Cod - I have never been there and would love to check out the coastline, visit the small villages, cities and the Atlantic. 3 nights there in a summer home on a bay.

Last 3 nights in Boston seeing the sights, historical and enjoying the area. Going home on Oct. 25th or 26th.

Anyone want to join me and a couple of girlfriends, let me know.

Have a great week.

Nancy in So Ca.
