Slim Pickins

An online recipe box for members of the Cheaper Than Lipo, Weight Loss & Nutrition, and Smart Heart Groups, and anyone else who wants to share what they've created!

Latest group announcement

Welcome to Slim Pickins!

Photobucket

This little online recipe box serves as an adjunct to groups already active on eons, such as Cheaper Than Lipo, Weight Loss and Nutrition, and the Smart Heart Group. Newcomers are always welcome too. We want what you've got, namely, your healthy and slimmed down recipes, and we're not so foolish to think we can't all learn from each other, or so selfish to deny anyone the tools with which to live a more healthy life. We are absolutely thrilled when we see new members in our midst!

If you would like to calculate and include nutritional information for your recipes, there is a nifty little tool that is completely free for that on Spark Recipes.

The Mayo Clinic has published a very helpful page on recipe substitutions, as has Ohio State University.

Please also feel free to share your discoveries as you as you come across them. There's a wealth of invaluable information out there, just waiting for us to find and benefit from it. Be sure not to transcribe or cut and paste the recipes from the articles and the recipes you find, though, even if you credit the source, for if you repost material found elsewhere without the authors’ express permission, it is copyright infringement and in violation of eons’ TOU, and we have no choice but to delete it. Simply post a short introduction and link to the recipe or the article you found, and that will be fine!

Any recipes for which you significantly modify the ingredients and the directions are, of course, your very own, and may be posted in their entirety. So get creative! Play a little! Dig out those old family favorites, slim them down, and show us what you can do!

Pears

The new way to lose weight??? Well, who knew?

I just read an article in Health Magazine that women who ate three pears a day lost more weight then those who didn't. Pears are rich in fiber, one pear equaling 15 percent of your days total needs. According to the article the women ate a low calorie diet along with exercise and ate one pear before each meal.

I have no idea if this is a good thing or not but I thought I'd put it out there and let you decide for yourself.

24 Hours

Did you know that if you added just one healthy thing per 24 hours to your life they would eventually add up to a healthier you?

That's right. You don't have to change your entire lifestyle in one day and that's it. Just one thing per day. If you are in a "lets get this going" mood, it can be a big thing but if you are in a boy am I tired and don't feel like adding anything today, mood. You can add a little thing. It doesn't matter if it is a small or large change as long as one thing gets changed per day for the better and continued.

Example. Day one, pick out the diet plan you think you can follow., day two walk ten minutes. Day three, throw out or give away unhealthy foods you know you shouldn't have, day four, go shopping for some healthy snacks and one healthy dinner, day five sip on water here and there all day. Day six, Invite a friend for a short walk in the park, day seven, add one veggie to your diet you've never had before, day eight, start taking a vitamin supplement.

You get the picture? Don't try to build Rome in one day and be done with it. Take the rest of your life to build Rome and be sure to have some fun doing it. Hey one day could even be take a nice twenty minute nap..That is a healthy thing too. Even allowing your self one piece of dark chocolate on a day following a big change.

Be sure to keep up with your changes and add to them. If the change was wrong for you, no big deal, change it again. In fact make as many changes as needed until you got one you can live with. Just keep getting healthier, 24 hours at a time.

NEW FOOD GAME....

Here's an idea for a new food game, one everyone can play and hopefully more will get involved and post answers!

Starting with the letter A and continuing through the alphabet...name a food item and tell us how you prepare it. In the event you name an herb, spice or a component item, tell us in what dishes you use it. If you cannot think of any, don't pass...go on to the next letter!

Okay, I'll begin with "AVACADO"...I like the Haas variety, sliced in a salad or in making guacamole.
Your turn, give us a "B".

Thank you all

I found so many great recipes in here. My husband has diverticulitus and has to have a lot of fiber.
Anyone have any suggestions for me? He is a meat and potatoes man and I have problems getting him to eat veggies.

Did you know that the nutrients in a healthy diet that you consume to nourish your skin and the cells in your body, need to reach those cells and in order to do that it needs in part, water. so be sure to sip on a little water all day to help the nutrients to get into your cells. Drink some water with your meals.

FDA latest report on tomatoes & peppers

view link

FDA latest report is now reporting cases of salmonella connected with certain peppers and certain tomatoes remain on the forbidden list.

Stay tuned to see if any good vegetables or fruits remain OK for us to eat by the end of the summer!

I'm going to check out other sites and updates on this later in the day
