Science Fiction

People who enjoy science fiction books, conventions, movies and/or TV programs. The object is to discuss science fiction. What are our favorite authors, books, movies, TV programs, etc. Join us and let us know your views.

Doctor Who

As a long time Whovian and of course a lover of the newest spin-off Torchwood, I find that being part of SciFi in all genres is fulfilling and a good balance to the day-today. One of my favorite books (and sorry but I don't remember the author) was "The Mote in God's Eye". Asimov has always been a favorite of mine and I do Podcast as well as have a subscription to Audible.com

My daughter recently turned me on to The Big Finish. Google it and check it out (especially if you are a Doctor Who fan). Full cast audios for your listening pleasure when stuck in the worse traffic Los Angeles can offer up.

Having fun....

SF Fan

Hello All, A new member who has been reading SF for 60 years. All of my favorite authors are now deceased, and I'm slowly (very slowly, unfortunately) finding substitutes for those Hard SF authors that I loved. (Heinlein foremost among that select group) So far I have acquired a taste for Robert Sawyer, Charles Sheffield John Barnes and Rajnar Vajra. Hoping to find some new leads in this group.

finding authors

Hello! As a new member of Eons, I was pleased to find a forum where folks seem to want to discuss reading SF - although I am certainly a fan of Trek, SW, Bab5, Eureka. I also miss so many authors of the past - Poul Anderson, Hal Clement, and Marian Zimmer Bradley in particular. Current favorites are Bujold, Sawyer, Resnick. Would love to hear of others to try.
I also read mysteries (I owned an bookstore for over 17 yrs - Mysteries From The Yard). And as a former archaeologist, I enjoy fiction that incorporates archaology into the plot.
Looking forward to our discussion.

Another medium

How about another medium offering (among other genres) science fiction: podcasting?

I started to get into podcast fiction when I had a lengthy commute and was looking for something to listen to in the car. To my joy I found that no small amount of science fiction is being released as podcasts these days.

(In case your not familiar with podcasting, no you don't need an IPod or other digital music player. Most are available as MP3 files which you can download to and play on your computer.)

By far the best I've heard has been the series "7th Son" by J.C. Hutchins. Two books in the series are out so far, with the third due out this summer.

You would be doing yourself a favor to visit Hutchins' web site and get hooked on these novels. The challenge will be to catch up by 07/07/07, the release date for the start of Book 3.

This guy can write.

Sci-fi conventions

I have found that there are numerous Sci-fi conventions every weekend. If you are interested in book conventions there are several of them around the country. The next one I know of is in Columbus Ohio the last weekend in September. It is called Context. I plan on going. I have not been to a book con in a few years. I got to see Brinn, the author of "The Postman" and got a Postman poster signed by him. I am going to Chicago the first weekend in October. There will be a Star Trek con and a Zena con in the same hotel.
If any of you know about cons coming up let us know.

Duplicate Sentence

Sorry about writing the same sentence twice. I think when I retired, my brain retired with me.

Hunters of Pern

I thought I had read all the Pern books, but do not remember this one. I have lagged behind in my reading. It seems since I retired, I have not had time to read as much as I used to. Once you retire, people think that you have time on your hands and they manage to keep you busy, whether you want to be or not.

glad to join

I love scifi. I have since I was about 10. I collect series. I have one that took me thirty years to get all three. I've been to a Worldcon in Orlando at the Peabody. What a trip. I got into a party that was invitation only and met the De Lints.
I just the read Skies of Pern, Ender's Shadow and Hunters of Pern. All three are really good.
Thanks for the group

4 x 4x

I believe it was Heinlein who wrote a short story called "4 x 4x". It was about an elementary school student who was working with his calculator when he determined that it should be possible for the brain, itself, to do arithmetic. Does anyone know where I can find this?
