The lure of grandkids..

I recently blogged on this topic...

When they're little, their faces light up when they see you, their hugs are genuine, and their kisses sweeter than candy. You can't get enough of them. Unconditional love abounds! But do you uproot yourself and move across country because you need to impinge yourself in the middle of their lives? I say no because, in what equates to nano seconds, they're inundated with peer pressure, camp, soccer, dance, mall trips, and they'd just as soon kick you under the rug unless you come bearing gifts of money.

The above sounds negative, and I'm not writing from personal experience as my grandkids are ages 2 and 4, but it happens. I hear about this all the time. I think you can stay interesting to older grandkids simply by living and loving your own life and letting it show through. They'll want to come bask in your glow!

Do you plan on relocating to be closer to your grandkids?

Recreational Villages

Have any of you ever lived in a place where the houses are permanently placed Recreational Vehicles - Park Models or Travel Travelers permanently affixed?

Was it good for you or not your style? We have a lot here in Mesa and I always wondered if it was nice or if everyone was just too close and in your face.

Condo retirement

I picked up a book about retired empty nesters deciding to buy a condo in the city for the stimulation, etc. My question is about noise from the neighbors above and below, to the right and to the left. I love the quiet of my house. I am intrigued about getting a condo downtown but nowhere have I read about the potential noise issue. I assume the answer is that "of course you are going to hear your neighbors, and if that bothers you, then don't buy a condo." On the other hand I wonder if they are building condos now a days that are quieter than the apartments that I lived in 30 years ago.

Any thoughts?

Nextville by Barbara Corcoran

Someone mentioned the book "Nextville (Amazing Places to Live the Rest Of Your Life") by Barbara Corcoran, so I bought the book and just finished reading it. I recommend it highly. I learned a long time ago that if you get one or two ideas from a do it yourself book, you get your money's worth.
One idea that caught my interest: Under the title of 'Best Places for the Boomerang Lifestyle':

" For those of us who like the beach, but want the closeness of a big city, try Beaufort, South Carolina, a small town between the great beaches of Hilton Head Island, and the the urban chic of Charleston, South Carolina, or Savannah, Georgia, both only a short distance away. Beaufort has a unique mix of old-world charm and small town friendliness. The lovely downtown streets have historic buildings, and the trees are amazing moss draped oaks. Beaufort is a coastal town great for boating, and every year they have a shrimp festival. They also have a film festival. The Big Chill and Forrest Gump were filmed here."

The median cost of a home is $156,000. There are 216 sunny days a year.

Here are some photographs of Beaufort:
