It is a fun group, seeking input those with an interest in how human beings work.
Hopefully, a learning experience for us all.

PTSD

I have been a psychologist for over 25 years and once worked for the VA as a psychologist treating mostly Vietnam veterans with their issues. I should also mention that I am a two tour Vietnam veteran wounded twice and was a Marine Force Recon with most of my duty in the DMZ.

My interest is to see how many people actually understand the nature of PTSD and to find out if those suffering from it have found ways to manage it better. I am not seeking information to aid in helping me cope with \it because I am beyond that kind of help. Of course I was a bit "crazy" before I entered the military, so no further explanation is needed.

The first part of my request stems from my amazement of how many people have no clue what Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is. Would love to get feed back from those who suffer from it and those who want to know more about it. I am not interested in hearing the details of the stressor unless one feels comfortable in doing so. Other than that, I am interested in hearing from one and all.

Children and Addiction

Hi everyone...I work with pre-school age children. I have a four year old that I am working with that is obsessed with weapons. He turns everything and anything into a gun, sword, knife, whip, etc. Every activity or project turns into a game of power and the other children become his victims. This has been on-going for a year. He is not interested in any other type of play. Children of this age love superheros and pretend play but they round it out with other activities also and a preoccupation usually passes with growth and time. So, are people born with deviant minds, thinking errors, and addictions? My trainings have led me to believe that these behaviors were learned. You know the saying, "A murderer was not born a murderer." Now I am really wondering...lauren

Super Tuesday

New day, I speak to my students and they are mad at us, our generation. They feel robbed of their inheritance, saddled with the debt that we have created and uncomprehending of our politics. There is an anger in the next generation and a frustration that I have not seen since the Sixties. There is an emotional tone of betrayal. Can one generation feel betrayed by another. I remember Vietnam and the protests and the feeling that those older than us had gone off of some psychological cliff. Is it happening again.

Dealing with Alzhiemers

I have now changed places with my Mom, she is in what the Drs call the 2nd stage of alzhiemers. She so different from the Mom I used to have she is sometimes combative and will cuss you out for no reason at all.She will not take her medsand since she will not accept our help out right of a home attendent we had to place her in a nursing home it was one of the hardest things I ever had to do.Me being the oldest child had to make the hard decisions that only my brother would agree with. I am also dealing with a grandson with special needs (he suffers from Ptsd and learning disabilities.) He's doing ok these days, but its my Mom that has me troubled.

Overwhelmed

My 65 year old husband was recently diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer's by his neurologist. I am, to say the least, floored. He is taking Aricept and we have gone to a nutritionist who has him on several supplements.

Hello from Oregon

Hello- I am hoping to connect with some intelligent people here who can help me with
'stable' psychology- not the horses, but the people who own them! I have a great horse and board her at a stable I really like...finally found a good one after some mis-takes. Seems there is a lot of 'drama' at boarding stables, mostly with boarders telling others how to take care of their horse etc, unsolicited advice, etc. I guess it's like throwing a bunch of strangers in a home together as roommates, but one would think that people would make friends with some, not so with others, but as adults would be courteous and respectful. That's how I am anyway...but have found a myriad of 'games' that are more like high school or junior high than anything else.

The one where I am now has been great, and I love it. The owners are neat people, in their late 40's,early 50's, and work really hard to keep the place nice. They had had a dairy but converted it to a stable as that is where the money is.

There are 2 barns, and the barn I am in now is fine, but the 4H kids are running all around ( I like kids, but in smaller doses. I try to go when they are not having a meeting). There is another barn on the same property that is quieter, more adult, cooler in the summer and has longer runs. I put in a request for a stall there when one opened up, and got it. I didn't tell anyone, but the owner sent me a note saying I had it.

Well, someone found out and in the past two days several grown women have approached me to 'warn' me about the other barn, and one of the ladies there. I have met that lady and she is fine, we get along and I also get along with the other 3 in there. My intuition says that the older barn will be wonderful, and my horse will like it better, too.

I just can't understand all these mid 40's women chasing me around ( literally) trying to bully me into staying where I am. I have had to be firm and tell them that it is not their business and I am quite happy with my choice. The owners are the ones that offered me the other stall, and I get along great with them.

Now I will be glad to get this pack of women off my case...

Any ideas as to why this would be going on? It's childish and I am ignoring their whining ...now that I have told them to stop it..they continue to whine but I tune them out. Luckily this will be over June 1st.

Any ideas/advice welcome.Thanks!

Toxins and Alzheimers, Toxins and Autism

I really think that these two horrible deseases are caused by or at least aggravated by all the toxins that we injest. Just notice how everything that you put into or onto your body has been stored, wrapped, frozen, sealed, served in PLASTIC..most of our lives we have eaten foods contaminated by plastic or metals. I think these poinsionings have profound affect on our body and it's ability to reproduce healthy new cell growth and healthy children. Water bottled in plastic, milk bottled in plastic, meat wrapped in plastic, candy, chips, frozen foods, boxed cereal has within it a plastic bag containing the cereal. People are so used to this plastic material that they don't see it anymore. I am developing a plastic phobia along with a metal phobia...I use only glass cookwear and will only buy bottled water that comes in a glass bottle..like Perrier. I wish I could buy milk in a good old fashioned glass milk bottle. I am using glass jars, like peanut butter jars for storing foods in, instead of plastic containers. It is almost impossible to avoid plastic or aluminum (metal) contamination in our 'progressive' world.

Institutional Review Board

I am Director of an Institutional Review Board at a College. It is a strange job, since the job is like being a judge and policeman to a bunch of researchers. The goal is to stop people from doing bad things to people in the name of research. On the other hand, you are allow to do bad things if the good of the research outweights the bad that you might do.

People forget that research can be dangerous and it is never completely safe. Aspirin kills people, but you had to research on someone. Was it worth a few initial deaths to save many, yes I think so. It takes a wisdom that comes with age and experience to do the job. Fortunately, there are a group of people on the committee who can yell at me when I am not wise or at least talk to me.

Accepting the criticism, weighting options, balancing threat and safety, these are all things that we do so much better as we age. at least I hope so. We have a couple of young members on the committee also to tell the grays when we are getting too pedantic, and not balancing correctly.

Just the ethical discussions, sharpen my brain and give me a challenge besides the occassional headaches. We take people from the community too, to be on the committee, since scientists can get involved in group-think. Meaning we put our gray heads together and become dumb like a herd of buffalo going over a cliff.

Mental balancing is a great excercise for my gray matter, try it, think over some ethical decisions you have to make daily. Post a response and let's talk.
