Crop Covers
Hi Everyone! I decided to try crop covers this year so the deer wouldn't make a bed out of my pea crop, and it is working out very nicely here high up in the mountains. Although peas are a cold weather crop, the covers are doing a great job of keeping the soil warm at night and I should be harvesting them by June 1 or a little earlier.
The crop covers are also doing a nice job of keeping the dozens of baby rabbits out of the raised beds.
We had a frost last night, and I placed crop covers over the early tomato plants I set out and it worked great.
The crop covers are reasonably priced, should last about 4 to 5 seasons with proper care, and I purchased them from Harris Seed Company. I highly recommend them for anyone who wants an early start and a bigger harvest.

How do you get a grip on THISTLE?
I'm hoping to find a "pen-pal" or 2 who will encourage me to not give up on the clay and weed disaster surrounding our house. I'm on the train by 6:30 in the morning, home by 6:30 at night, then if I have ANY energy, I change into whatever grungies look the least wrinkled and force myself to the gym where I do my mandatory 25 minutes on a treadmill. That's for my blood pressure, and last year I noticed on days I weeded (which is what I call gardening), my blood pressure was even better. So ... I need to garden! And I'm sure the neighbors will appreciate it.
The people across the road from us have a thistle factory, I swear. Well, thistles, and wild raspberry briers. (Last year I snuck over and picked some of the raspberries growing by the road, not that they probably even knew they HAVE raspberries!) Anyway, the thistle puffs find their way over here, blown by the tires of the constant traffic on our busy road. I have daffodil stems up about 7 inches, and all around them are little baby thistle plants. And that's in the bed I completely dug up last November. How do you get a grip on THISTLE? It's EVERYWHERE!!!!
If this group turns out to be any motivator for me, I'll swear you my undying allegience!

Come on over!
I joined this group as it was PA gardening- but I see there is not a lot of activity. I have also joined a much more active group- The Green Thumb Gang- so come on over there too!
I will keep checking in here to see if the group gets more active in the spring- maybe the rest of NW PA is hibernating?

For All You Spring Doubters . . .
Hello Everyone,
I am new to the group. Been meaning to join earlier, but have kept getting the darn flu bug back over and over again. I am a 2-time cancer survivor, and have had it constantly since November. :-(
But, if any of you are doubting spring, I have 14 inches of new snow here in my back yard, but my willow trees are just about to burst open! Some pods are already about 1/4 open. So, don't worry gang, it will be here in a few weeks and we can all get our hands dirty, again!
I started a group recently called Recycle Tips and have posted a really good idea for fellow gardeners. You may want to take a peek.
I am into eco-friendly gardening and have been doing it on a small scale for a many years, but this year, I am really going to go "big". My main goal is to take my entire lot and turn it into a garden. I mentioned this to my neighbor last fall, and her brother-in-law near Lancaster started that in his yard a few years back and is about 3/4 done. She said it really looks nice once it gets moving.
I am really hoping to bring back the butterflies and native plants to our area. A field below us was sold and developed, causing 8 species of flora I had been cultivating to be lost. I spoke to the owner, and was able to bring some of the plants still there in the undeveloped part to my yard last year and they took surprisingly well. This year, I am going to try to rescue the last 2 remaining chicory plants. I am also ordering milkweed seeds so the butterflies can have a place to nest. Is anyone else into saving native species? I vegetable garden, but my flowers are my love and have 5 flower gardens.
Dust off your seed starters and get ready to plant. Spring IS coming! The willow trees know!

seed starting
It has been 40 years since I lived in Butler County Pa.
and Iwonder what is the right time to start seeds for
planting outside ( as peppers and tomatos ).

Jazzin it Up
Hey fellow gardeners,
I was just wonderin how many of y'all are plannin on goin to the Philly Flower Show? I'll be there on Monday for the Garden Writers Association Region II meeting. If you happen along the Show floor and see someone wearing a name tag that says "TC Conner," stop and say howdy!

Almost Here
I am anxiously awaiting the chance to get out in the garden and get my hands dirty again. But this AM I'm looking out through the window at snow covering my flower beds and no real sign of the fresh green that means spring. Back to the catalogs and garden plans for a few more weeks yet.
Spring is coming!
Just updating to see if anybody else is noticing signs of spring. Despite the bitter cold in negative numbers here the better part of this week, the snowdrops are pushing up! I pruned the dwarf apple trees yesterday and hope to get a few apples from them this year- we planted them three years ago. Trying to replace the ancient trees that are dying off. We bought this old farm and there are thirteen apple trees and two pear trees, but the yield is poor as the trees were not cared for. Most of them have hollow hearts from the carpenter ants- how sad, as they are very old heirloom type trees.
The trees and bushes actually have buds if you look close enough and the berry canes are so colorful now with the snow cover.
Anybody else?
