Candy Wreath

This wreath might be too tempting to remain intact for long. To make it, you'll need 2 pounds of hard candy in twisted wrappers, an 8-foot length of embroidery thread, and a round wire wreath form that is 8 inches in diameter. First, tie the center of the thread to the form, leaving two ends of equal length. Hold the form between your knees (as shown), and make a loose knot on the outside of the form. Place ends of three wrappers through loop; cinch the knot, and knot again. Tie another knot to the form, thus securing the candies to it, then gently position them side by side. Tie three candies to the inside of the wreath form, completing the first ring. Once candies are tied all around the form, hang it from a ribbon.

Apples Are Tops With Me
Ever since I was small, apples have always been my favorite fruit! I find it very satisfying. My Mom baked apple pies, apple cobblers and homemade applesauce! We also use to go to a nearby farmers stand in St. Louis and buy fresh fruits and vegetables. Mom bought a huge tray of strawberries and put up strawberry jam for us! My mouth is watering just thinking about these memories. (I am now 73 but nothing wrong with my memory...haha).
I do believe "an apple a day keeps the doctor away"! We were always a pretty healthy family with good, wholesome eating habits. Of course, my Mom made most meals from scratch since she was a homemaker, for which I loved!

Fall....
At this time of the year we use the words, Fall, Autumn and sometimes Indian Summer and Harvest. What does Fall or Autumn mean to you? Is it your favorite season? Do you have special memories you would care to share?
Apple Facts
Archeologists have found evidence that humans have been enjoying apples since at least 6500 B.C.
The world's largest apple peel was created by Kathy Wafler Madison on October 16, 1976, in Rochester, NY. It was 172 feet, 4 inches long. (She was 16 years old at the time and grew up to be a sales manager for an apple tree nursery.)
It takes about 36 apples to create one gallon of apple cider.
Apples account for 50% of the world's deciduous fruit tree production
The old saying, “ an apple a day, keeps the doctor away ”. This saying comes from am old English adage, “ To eat an apple before going to bed, will make the doctor beg his bread.”
Don't peel your apple. Two-thirds of the fiber and lots of antioxidants are found in the peel Antioxidants help to reduce damage to cells, which can trigger some diseases.
In 2005 United States consumers ate an average of 46.1 pounds of fresh apples and processed apple products. That's a lot of applesauce

The ABC's of Apple Varieties
Arkane
Harvest August through mid-September
Season August- September
Quality juicy, tart and crisp, excellent quality, not the best keeper
Use fresh-eating
Akane is a newer variety that was developed in Japan. Round and bright red, it is an early apple with lively coloration and taste. It is not widely grown here, but should you see some in season don't hesitate to give them a try. It is juicy and crisp, tart and invigorating. The flavor is
somewhat reminiscent of Jonathan.
Boskoop
Harvest late September
Season late September through December
Quality large, russeted apple, tart, highly flavored
Use fresh-eating and cooking
Boskoop, or Belle de Boskoop, as it is also known, is a large yellowish russeted apple that is very popular in Europe as a cooking and fresh-eating apple. Boskoop is an apple that bites back and may be too strongly flavored for Americans who are used to a bland diet. It was discovered in Holland in the 1850's and has been grown here since at least the 1890's. It is firm and crisp, tart and somewhat dry, full flavoured, very aromatic and gets sweeter in storage. Boskoop does well in storage, keeping 3-4 months or more.
Chenango Strawberry
Harvest late August early September
Season August through September
Quality tender juicy flesh, small attractive apple
Use fresh-eating
Chenango Strawberry, also called Strawberry Chenango, is a delicate and attractive fruit that does not ship or store well. Slightly tart and juicy with a unique aroma, it can be a very good fresh-eating apple at its peak.
