Peace pipe
I am not Native American but did not know how to ask my question without joining the group. A couple of months a go my husband came home with a pipe he found at an antique store. I recognized it to be an old peace pipe. We have been offered a fair amount of money for it so we decided to research and find out more about it. Our first thought was that we had hit paydirt and could make some money on it. Last week a Native American man walked into my shop so I showed him pictures of it and asked if he knew something. It is a broken pipe that had been repaired with lead or pewter. He stated in his religion a broken pipe would be laid to rest. We decided it would be a good idea to research further. We got several books on Native culture and beliefs. One of the books we read was Lame Deer Seeker of Visions. After reading this book we are now wondering if it should be sold at all. From what we are learning it seems that the pipe goes way beyond a religious tool. I would really like to know how other Native Americans feel about it.

A Temporary Victory
I received the following information in an email today:
"In a victory for the gray wolves of the northern Rockies, a federal judge today ruled in favor of Earthjustice's request to stop the wolf slaughter while our case challenging the removal of endangered species protections is heard.
The court ordered that wolves be temporarily protected under the federal Endangered Species Act while it continues to consider the arguments for long term protection.
Once again, the courts have proven to be the best line of defense for threatened wildlife. Earthjustice has the legal expertise that the environmental community relies on when they need to win. Earthjustice represents the environmental community for no cost -- and we win.
But the battle is not over. In the coming weeks, the lawyers of our Northern Rockies office will continue our case to permanently restore protections for the gray wolves. We will keep you posted as news develops."
