The Real Tony #20 story starts

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Two-time NASCAR champion Tony Stewart has been granted a release from the final year of his driving contract with Joe Gibbs Racing after ten seasons with the team, sources close to Stewart confirmed for ESPN.com Tuesday night.

Stewart will formally announce his departure from the team Wednesday.

On Thursday at Chicagoland Speedway, Stewart will formally announce a move to Haas/CNC Racing as co-owner and driver, sources close to Stewart said.

Haas/CNC, which currently fields the Nos. 66 and 70 Chevrolets, will be renamed Stewart Haas Racing in 2009.

Sources close to both sides told ESPN.com the deal will make Stewart the highest-paid driver in NASCAR.

Sources also said the Stewart Haas cars will carry different numbers. The No. 14, made famous in IndyCar racing by Stewart's hero, A.J. Foyt, is available, but sources would neither confirm nor deny that as his choice.

Sources said Stewart will own a 50 percent stake in the organization, but his financial investment in attaining it was not disclosed.

As ESPN.com's David Newton initially reported, Office Depot will have a role in sponsoring Stewart's car.

Ryan Newman remains the lead candidate to drive Stewart Haas' second car, sources said, though no deal had yet been finalized Tuesday night.

Stewart Haas will continue to receive chassis and engines from Hendrick Motorsports. Haas/CNC's current drivers, Scott Riggs and Johnny Sauter, are ranked 36th and 44th, respectively, in the owner point standings.

If the team's performance fails to improve its points position during the second half of 2008, Stewart's champion's provisional will guarantee him a slot in the field for the first five races next season, presuming NASCAR doesn't change the rule.

During his tenure at JGR, which began in 1999, Stewart has recorded 32 victories, a pair of Sprint Cup championships and more than $68 million in winnings. Stewart has reinvested his wealth in racing. He owns multiple sprint car teams and a trio of racetracks, including Eldora Speedway.

NAVY pulls sponsorship for the 88

Dale Jr. dropped by Nationwide sponsor. Navy pulls sponsorship for next year's No. 88

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Add Dale Earnhardt Jr. to the growing list of car owners searching for sponsorship.

The Navy is leaving the No. 88 Chevrolet in the Nationwide Series at the end of the season, forcing Earnhardt to search for funding for the flagship car at JR Motorsports.

"We were informed last week that our sponsorship with the U.S. Navy will not renew at the end of the year," team spokesman Mike Davis said Tuesday. "It's been an exceptional partnership since 2005, and we look forward to a strong finish to the season as Brad Keselowski and the No. 88 Navy team contends for a NASCAR Nationwide Series championship."

Keselowski gave the Navy its first NASCAR victory last month with a Nationwide win at Milwaukee. He's second in the series standings, and trails Clint Bowyer by 202 points.

The Navy has been sponsor of Earnhardt's first car as a NASCAR owner since the formation of JR Motorsports. Last year, he merged his operation with Hendrick Motorsports and now fields two cars out of his new shop in Mooresville.

The second car, the No. 5, has been driven by multiple drivers and has used multiple sponsors all season. Mark Martin drove that car to Earnhardt's first win as a car owner at Las Vegas in March.

Sponsorship woes are affecting many NASCAR teams in this economic downturn. Just last week, Chip Ganassi shuttered his No. 40 Sprint Cup Series team driven by Dario Franchitti because of a lack of funding.

Several other teams have stopped coming to races — the number of cars that attempted to qualify for Saturday night's Sprint Cup race at Daytona was down eight from the 53 who attempted to make the season-opening Daytona 500. Of those, six lacked full sponsorship.

How many of u thought it would fly ?

Teresa Earnhardt Looking to sell DEI? UPDATE: Sirius NASCAR Radio's Sirius Speedway is reporting today that Teresa Earnhardt has enlisted the services of Bear, Stearns and Company to find a buyer -- or at least a major financial investor -- for Dale Earnhardt, Inc. Bear Stearns is an investment bank, securities trading and brokerage firm based in New York City, and has been charged with finding a buyer for the entire operation. Barring that, Earnhardt is said to be interested in selling at least a minority interest in the team. DEI President of Global Operations Max Siegel declined to comment on the story when contacted earlier today.

Oh FINES suspensions DEI Truex Jr.

PENALTIES: NASCAR has issued penalties, fines and suspensions to the car #1 team that competes in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, as a result of rules infractions found last week at Daytona International Speedway. The car driven by Martin Truex Jr., was found to be in violation of Sections 12-4-A (actions detrimental to stock car racing); 12-4-Q (car, car parts, components and/or equipment used do not conform to NASCAR rules); and 20-3.8A (roof of the car does not conform to the specifications) of the 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series rule book. As a result, Truex Jr. and car owner Teresa Earnhardt have been penalized 150 championship driver and 150 championship owner points, respectively. Both the crew chief, Kevin Manion, and the car chief, Gary Putnam, have been suspended from the next six NASCAR Sprint Cup Series events, suspended from NASCAR until Aug. 27 and placed on NASCAR probation until Dec. 31. Additionally, Manion has been fined $100,000. The infractions were discovered July 3 during opening day inspection.(NASCAR PR), the penalty moves Truex from 14th in drivers pts, -88 out of the Chase to 18th in drivers points, 238 points out of the Chase.

Was it a meal or talking a deal?

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- It was probably just an innocent breakfast.

Then again ...

On the morning of the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway, there was an eye-catching breakfast gathering at Doc Bales' restaurant in the Hilton Ocean Walk hotel.

The group at a large table, front and center, included Chip Ganassi and Felix Sabates, owners of the NASCAR organization that bears both their names, along with Michael Waltrip Racing executive vice president Cal Wells and Michael Waltrip's partner and money man, Rob Kauffman.

"Rob Kauffman said he wanted to meet Chip and me," Sabates said matter-of-factly at the Speedway later that afternoon.

Indeed, you could construe the meeting as a convivial breakfast between men with common interests. Ganassi and Wells have a history together in the open-wheel ranks, where Ganassi is a titan, with two Indianapolis 500 victories and an Indy Racing League title to his credit.

Kauffman, who lives in London, owns an automobile restoration shop, RK Collection, located right around the corner from Ganassi's race shop in Concord, N.C.

"In fact, when I was looking around to figure out how to configure (the shop) and looking for ideas on how to set up the flooring and the lighting, I actually got a tour of his facility," Kauffman said Saturday evening after the drivers' meeting at Daytona.

So let's just take the breakfast conclave at face value.

TOP 10 WAYS TO PUNISH JUABLO FOR WRECKIN VYLE BUSH

Top Ten Ways NASCAR Should Punish Juablo For Spinning Vyle Busch
Jeff Meyer · Wednesday July 2, 2008

10. Two lap penalty for “rough, but extremely funny and satisfying” driving.

9. With the whole “Mo” lawsuit going on, you can’t punish the only living symbol of NASCAR “diversity!”

Vyle Busch, beware! Juablo is looking for you…
8. Make him run The Coke Zero 400 at Daytona without fenders on his car.

7. Have him write a handwritten apology to every single Kyle Busch fan and pay for postage…wait a minute…that’s no punishment!

6. Require Juan to hand write a personal note to every single driver, owner, and fan who has thanked him. That should make him think twice next time!

5. Start limiting the amount of “social time” he is spending with Jimmy Spencer.

4. Punishment for what? He did nothing wrong!

3. Make Juan Pablo count all the profits Brian France will realize from
JPM rivalries with other drivers.

2. During the remainder of the 2008 season, require him to put his arm around Kyle Busch’s shoulder and repeat, “Say hello to my little friend,” for a new series of NASCAR promotional commercials.

1. Award him 100 Bonus Points for “actions detrimental to Kyle Busch!”

Golly TEI and Truex has fines

No. 1 fails Daytona practice inspection, car impounded
By Mark Aumann, NASCAR.COM
July 3, 2008

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- A black No. 1 Chevrolet belonging to Dale Earnhardt Inc. sat forlornly in a corner of the Sprint Cup garage area Thursday afternoon, and with it, perhaps the Chase for the Sprint Cup chances for Martin Truex Jr.

NASCAR officials impounded Truex's car after it repeatedly failed pre-practice technical inspection. According to NASCAR spokesman Kerry Tharp, the car's roof did not fit the mandatory templates.

While the car was being prepared to be transported to NASCAR's research and development center in Concord, N.C., the team was unloading the backup car from the No. 1 hauler.

It's unknown at this time what fines and penalties may be assessed against owner Teresa Earnhardt, crew chief Kevin Manion and Truex. After finishing fourth last week at New Hampshire, Truex is currently 14th in the standings with 1,945 points, 71 points behind Kevin Harvick, who is 12th with nine races remaining before the 12-car Chase field is set.

Earlier this season, NASCAR impounded the cars of Scott Riggs and Johnny Sauter before Saturday's practice at Lowe's Motor Speedway for having wing mount violations. Each driver was penalized 150 points.

A similar penalty would drop Truex to 17th position.

In 2003, NASCAR impounded Tony Stewart's car at Texas Motor Speedway for failing to fit the templates. However, the No. 20 team was not saddled with further penalties.
