Welcome to the group!

Hello Eons! I live in Miami, Florida and am passionate about working with the community here on Eons in the area of medication safety. Professionally, I am a pharmacist and work for University of Miami - Humana Health Services Research Center. All throughout my career, I have worked in numerous areas for patient safety advocacy and promoting policies for a better healthcare system for us all.

I strive to contribute my share to making a better healthcare system - one that will be not only affordable and accessible, but also safe. Bring your stories, your tips, questions and dilemmas. I look forward to talking with you in this group.

Meds and lighted headedness

My adult son takes Amphetamine Salts 10 mg and Cymbalta 60 mg.
Now that the weather is hot,he gets light headed when outside in the heat.
He has to work outdoors. Are the meds causing this? What can he do?

Hello everyone

Hey there...and there....and there.

I just joined up and post mostly jokes I get in email to my blog so if you want to read some funnies take a peak.

My doc just gave me a script for Paxil CR and after reading the warnings that came with it I am afriad to take any. Does anyone have any thoughts or opinions on it?? It's a 12.5 dose and in the past I had HORRIBLE reactions to Citalopram and Zoloft.

Thanks for your advice!!

Hi...

Here's one that's a little different.

I don't take anything at all except a multivitamin and a baby aspirin a day, as a prophylactic measure, due to my family history of heart disease. My husband, who had two stents inserted this past November, takes the aspirin and a whole lot more besides.

There was a chiropractor at my gym doing free screenings the other day (the old wave the sonic wand over the spine thing). I was told I was out of alignment and at risk of "shutting down," and offered Xrays and a consultation for $25.00 the following day.

Curiosity got the best of me. I paid, I went, I filled out my medical history form and got filmed. My skepticism started to grow when the chiro told me that I would never have needed my pyeloplasty (a surgery to restructure my left ureter, which had a congenital kink in it, due to my freaking genetic encoding, dammit!!) if I had kept my spine in alignment. Apparently regular adjustments retroactively correct DNA glitches in utero. Now you know.

Where I went over the edge and walked out, though, is when he told me to discontinue my baby aspirin immediately, and to insist that my cardiac patient husband do the same. He stated that recent studies show that even low dose aspirin increases the risk of heart disease and cancer.

I was livid. He was telling us to be noncompliant with the cardiologist's orders. And I saw so many old people in his practice. I've got to wonder how many of them take his word as gospel, because of the Dr. in front of his name, and actually do what he tells them to. One of them will wind up throwing a clot someday, and then, where's the liability?

I'd love to report him somewhere, but I have no idea how to proceed. I'd be interested in your input on this!

Numerous Meds for Numerous ailments

HEllo, Med Safety 50+ !
I am curious about a particulsr issue, one whinch is heavily debated and I agree with bits and pieces of both (many) sides of this issue.

I have seen many friends, of many age groups sufer with dibilitating pain and watched their Care Providers refuse, or submit begrudginly, to give them narcotic medications for fear of patient becomming dependant. NOw, I believe, first, that if a Pt. has good reason (moderate to severe pain) then the meds will be used by the body accordingly and once (if) the spin is abated and / or subsides completely, then the body will adjust accordingly if the dosage is lowered incrementally and supervised. Secondly, I have seen Patients in the final years of life (say - 70+ ) presenting with OBVIOUS reasons for the pain with which they suffer, and again, Care Givers STILL are reticent to give WHATEVER is needed to control pain for these pts. One ws my Mother (passed at 81 yrs. just last May 14th of Cancer EVERYWHERE - - ANOTHER 50 PAGE RANT FROM ME AS SHE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED UNTILL TOO LATE,while being a 9 yr survivor of breast and lung cancers) I digress, sorry, but her Dr's were VERY slow in providing her adequate pain relief for fear of addiction. I was and still am livid. Who cares if she became dependant of Hydrocode 7.5/325 (NOrco, Lortab, etc..)???? She would ask me, 'you have any of your feel good pills with you "? (I also am prescribed more than one Narcotic Analgesic, which I will detail at the end of this "disertation" lol ) I smile as I type this, because I knew she got not only pain relief but the energy "boost" that often comes with an analgesic. I think it VERY irresponsible to allow a woman who still loved living, was still very active, painted, was very mentally vital, and the pain from severe Rheum. Arth. , the remnants of Breast lumpectomy, and lung resection, Fibro and just having lived 81 yrs. seriously hampered her ability to live the life her LIFE was still trying to live. (sounds weird that way, I guess, but I think you probably know what I am trying to say. So........after all that rambling, I would like your take on the sense it makes to withhold ANYTHING that will make life easier for anyone (especially a senior) to live to their fullest potential. **WHEW****

Newbie here

Being anew member I want to get out my list of medications first.
I am on Avinza, morphine sulphate, Tramadol, Lysix, Metaformin, Actos, Nexium, Lyrica, Zocor.
I am having troubles with severe edema in my feet & ankles. Some people, tell me it could be Metaformin and then others say the Lyrica.
Though I had this problem over a year ago for a few weeks and not on either one of them at the time.
Does, then make you feet swell.......
They just tested my thyroid also, kidneys function & diabetes all was good.
