Have you ever watched the sunset and listened to outstanding steel guitars while Kanoe Miller danced at the House Without a Key in the Halekulani Hotel?

Dined at Chai's Island Bistro and enjoyed the Brother's Cazimero? Are you a fan of Hawaii 5-0? Did you know that Moe Keale was an actor and Melveen Leed (one of Hawaii's best country stars) also appeared on the show? Have you been to one of the Masters of the Slack Key performances at the Napili Kai Resort on Maui? Do you stay up to all hours of the morning watching the Merry Monarch Hula Competition on the internet? Have you caught Danny Estocado, Maui's singing cowboy, at the Suncoast Hotel/Casino in Las Vegas? Are you amazed by the talented hawaiian musicians who anomously provide the music for hula competitions the world over.
If you can answer yes to any of these questions or the dozens of others that only you know when it concerns Hawaiian music, then this is the group for you.

Amazing
E Hula Mau 2008 is officially underway. It is the biggest hula competition on the West Coast and probably on the mainland US. Friday was the solo competitions. So many very talented young ladies. What is truly amazing is the caliber of musicians that provide the music for the performers. Four Na Hoku Hanohano Award winners were basically back up musicians. Natalie Ai Kamauu, Aaron Salas, Tony Conjugation and Hoku Zuttermeister. I did not recognize the musicians performing for Halau Keali`i O Nalani but I am pretty sure that if I heard their name i would recognize them. You would have to look pretty far and wide to find a similar occurrence where Grammy winners provided the music for a regional dance competition.
Saturday is the chant and Kahiko (ancient) Hula portion. Sunday will be the Auana (modern) Hula and once again the music will be incredible.

New So Cal Appearance by Hapa
Looks like Saturday is going to be busy! First I have an afternoon concert at Whittier College for the beginning of the Aloha Series. Scheduled are the Sons of Hawaii with Eddie Kamae, Mike Kaawa, Analu Aina, Ocean Kaowili and Paul Kim. Eddie Kamae along with Gabby Pahinui started the original Sons of Hawaii. Over the years The Sons of Hawaii have had many distinguished musicians perform with them. Of the current members Mike Kaawa is a wonderful 12 string guitarist and recently released a CD and toured with Led Kaapana (Force of Nature). Analu Aina played with Iz after he left the Makaha Sons of Nihihau. Ocean Kaowili performed with the Peter Moon Band and as an instrumentalist on Brian Tolentino's recent CD. Paul Kim is a great steel guitarist.
Then a just added bonus. Listening to Pakele Live tonight I discovered that Hapa will be in Irvine Saturday night for a concert at the Great Park. So I will make sure that I have ice in the ice chest, a blanket, and my lawn chair and as soon as the concert in Whittier is over I am jumping on the freeway and heading to Irvine! What a great adventure!

Slack Key Festival
Well the festival is happening right now. They actually went live a little early. So far I have heard Ozzie Kotani, Ho' okena, Owana Salazar, Steven English, Jeff Peterson and others. So if you can go to Hawaiian Slack Key Festival The streaming comes up on the main page and seems to be running with little problems. So tune in for some great music.
New Music
Well in reading the Honolulu Advertiser this morning I discovered that the Hawaiian Slack Key Festival is going to stream live from the Kapi'olani Park Bandstand on Sunday, August 17th. Time is noon to 6 p.m. That is a reasonable time frame for viewing for most of the mainland. Here is the link:

Over Whelmed!
I was going to post an update to the live Hawaiian music around the mainland and Hawaii for the next few weeks. Well there are just too many. Tonight you would have your choice of at least 5 tonight and another 5 on Friday and another 5 on Saturday and then a huge all day music festival in Waimanalo in memory of Gabby Pahanui. The rest of August is just as busy. So to simplify things I will just post the link to Mele.com.
Again for those of you who aren't near a venue featuring live music, you can always tune in to Pakele Live streaming at Alohatv.net tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. HST. That's 9 pm on the west coast and midnight on the east coast. I tend to go to sleep in the middle so I have software that will record the program so I can watch at a better time.
Tonights program features Nathan Aweau and Holunape. Both are well worth your time if you have a fast internet connection.

Music, Music, Music!
Yesterday was so enjoyable. I spent the afternoon in the park with friends crocheting. Trying to learn a new stitch. Then I drove along Ocean Avenue in Long Beach, through the harbor area and over the Vincent-Thomas bridge and up the 110 freeway to Carson. There in a parking lot outside of a older strip business building I unfolded my chair, had some ono grinds and settled in for hours of wonderful music.
First up was a local band calling themselves Raw Fish. They played mostly Island contemporary jawaiian. The evenings MC was Lopaka, grandson and great grandson to some of Hawaii's premiere kumu hula, former Falsetto Contest winner and Na Hoku Hano Hano winner. Next up was the group Holunape. I had seen them before in Ohau and they are really good. Next came Pilioha. They have been on Pakele Live and their music is wonderful. Their lead guitarist is very talented. To round out the evening Sean Na'auao.I have seen Sean perform many times and he is a very talented performer. All in all a great evening of Hawaiian music.
One interesting side note. Holunape is performing today in Kapiolani Park at the bandstand during the Ukulele Festival. So they flew over just for the day. They had a red eye flight out to make their appeararance toady at noon. What a feat.
Have you heard any Hawaiian music recently?

Pakele Live, July 14
The count down is on. Thursday night one of my favorites will perform live (via the internet) at the Pakele Lounge in the Ala Moana Hotel, WILLIE K. He is an awesome performer and if you haven't ever had the opportunity to see him, I really recommend that you tune in.
Pakele Live Tonight
The listed schedule for tonights performance is a bit confusing. The website says that from 6 to 7pm - Ben Vegas & Malia Gibson and from 6 to 8pm - Cyril Pahinui. I think that they mean that the first hour is Ben Vegas and Malia Gibson and the second hour is Cyril Pahinui.
If you have a high speed connection please try to watch at AlohaVideo. The shows are always good. I think that Ben Vegas and Malia Gibson are probably more contemporary. Cyril Pahinui is a true Hawaiian treasure and slack key master -- well worth staying up to hear.

Halau Hula Lani Ola
Yesterday evening I attended the 10th Anniversary Ho'ike for the Halau. This was the third weekend in a row that I have gotten to hear Hawaiian music. As close as I could estimate, there are about 200 dancers in the halau. If I lived closer, I would definitely think about joining and learning to dance.
I am always pleasantly surprised at the support given by other halaus. There were 5 Kumu Hula in the audience (one from Hawaii). After watching Halau Na Kamalei perform at the concert last Saturday, it was fun to see another perspective. The keiki were just delightful. But, it was especially great to see that Kumu Hula, Puanani Jung, is doing things a little differently to get men in her halau to dance. She has 9 kane that danced. Their ages ranged from about 50 to two keiki kane about 6 or 7. She has recruited husbands, fathers, sons and boyfriends to dance. How fun.
I would encourage all of you to get out and listen to live music. The summer season is coming up and in southern California, that means lots of free, live music.
