Gardening in heatwave.
High: 94°F
RealFeel®: 97°F
Winds: SW
at 7mph
I have been trying to re-do a small garden by the front door.
It is sooo hot out today, I end up getting soaked after a half hour.
I pulled out all the Sedum rupestre 'Angelina'
that had spread out of control. It even went
right through the bottom of the rose bush, up the concrete
step area and was headed for the side walk.
I just finished getting a Hydrangea bush in the dirt.
Now I am hoping that it doesn't get to much sun there.
I am in the AC cooling off right now and then I'll go back out to finish it.
We have been having this heat wave all week. I went to the
nursery a few times and bought a Honeysuckle, a yellow and
white kind that have a fragrance, a red Lily and a Phlox.

Red Sedum
Do any of you know if red sedum is a fast growing ground cover? They say the blossoms stay red into September? We are putting in a pon and there is a side hell that slope down to one side of it. I wanted to plant a colorful ground cover that would stay pretty throughout the summer and early fall. Are any of you familiar with it. I have yellow, but the blossoms do not stay full until fall.
Welcome Debbie!
Welcome DebbieRN53!
So glad you came to Petal Talk. From one person who loves to sit and take in the beauty of nature to another, I welcome you with this sun burst.
I was sitting at my computer (again) which faces a window overlooking the front yard and garden, when this shaft of light brightened the window. I looked up, and OMG. Out I went and got this shot.

From your profile, I see you take care of others; I hope this photo reminds you that you walk in the footsteps of someone who is always taking care of you, too.

Crape Myrtle is Here!
In Virginia, crape myrtle is bustin' out all over. Its vibrant colors (I've seen deep pink, bright pink, light pink, white, purple)and heavy blooms make it a very showy tree or shrub. We have three - a big (as tall as the house, not including the roof)one in front, and two rather new ones in back.
Here's one:

and a close-up. These blooms smell wonderful too.

Here's another one

They play nicely with contrasting flowers like these yellow lilies.

Where else in the US is this beautiful late summer plant in bloom? I remember a friend from NJ being smitten with them and taking some back with her. Never found out if they do well there.

Progress Photos
Please tell me this is normal.
With much excitement this Spring, I planted Green Envy Coneflower. I wrote about it, and you can see a photo of what it is eventually supposed to look like here: view link
I get so obsessed with my garden, that I try to control myself, and this coneflower was supposed to be my "one new thing I'll try this year" (as opposed to 50 new things!)
Here's the progression:
APRIL 5 - Bare root initial planting

APRIL 30

BY MAY 25, IT IS ONLY THIS BIG

BY JUNE 20, IT IS ONLY THIS BIG

So, my question is, Is this normal to grow so slowly in the first year? Here is a photo of one of my more mature (probably 2nd or 3rd year) white coneflowers, and it is much bigger.

So, what do you think?

Todays work.
I am surprised the amount of work I ended up getting
done today, even though it was pretty hot, high 80's.
I trimmed the small Hakuro Nishiki tree and cleaned
it up. Those branches sure got long this year. I then
went into the farmers pine tree field, with my shovel
and dug out the Mimosa tree I had found a few weeks
ago. It's about two feet high. I got a really big root ball,
weeds included. I put it in the back yard
right away but it ended up getting really stressed. Gave
it lots of water so we'll see if it survives or not. If it ends
up looking like it died, I'll leave it there because it just
might do something next year. I also got an Autumn
Fire Sedum planted, that I bought this past weekend.
I have three other sedum's like this but they are pink,
this one will be red and I see buds are one it now. I
also bought a red 'Starfire' Phlox, the tall kind and I'll
plant that tomorrow, at the front door area.
They smell so nice.
I said this is enough, time to quit, I was soaked and had
the in the dirt look.

Mimosa transplanted.

How the wildflower section looked today.

The is growing in the wildflower section.
