Crisco in door jams
So, if you put crisco liquid oil to stop a squeak in a door, and it's sort of cooked in the heat, how would you remove it?
Shower noise
Recently, after returning home from brief vacation, I started to shower. After turning on the water and pulling the plunger to engage the shower, a strange unworldly high pitched noise started. I kept trying to adjust the volume and temperature control to avoid it and it finally got better, but didn't completely stop. Also, the water stream from the shower head was thinner and sharper. Any ideas?
Mouse Issues
This really isn't a fix-it question, but more of a request for ideas.
I recently discovered that there is a mouse or mice in the crawl space below my house. There is access to the crawl space, but let's just say I'm not going down there and crawling around. Claustrophobia issues there!
Anyway, I've been putting traps down through the access door and baiting them with peanut butter. This has worked for me in the past. Somehow or the other, the mouse is able to get the peanut butter without springing the trap. I know the trap is set properly and in fact, it doesn't take much to spring it. Today I tried some cheese. Apparently, the critter likes the peanut butter better.
So, any ideas or suggestions?
I would rather not use poison because with my luck it would not decide to stay right below the access door. Also, I'm not too keen on using something like the glue boards or traps. If I'm going to kill it, I'd rather it didn't have to suffer a slow death.

Hot Water Heaters
Okay - here's one for you...I'm sure that my hot water heater needs to be cleaned. I've read somewhere that all the water should be emptied ever so often to clear out the debris that accumulates on the bottom - but I have no idea how to go about this without causing major flooding in my wash room. I see that there is a hose attachment on the bottom of the heater - but never having done this before I really need your expertise - Thanks : )

washing machine
My washing machine is leaking terribly. It's old and got some rust underneath. The leak is not coming from a pipe, it seems to be coming from a screw head or something on the bottom left side. Can I fix it with sealant? My bathroom is tiny and cramped so I was lying on the floor in a pool of water, jammed between the washer, dryer, shower and commode when I checked it. (Yeah, it was unplugged)
Taking Care Of Your Deck
I don't know about the rest of you but I spent quite abit of money building my deck, plus the deck wooden furniture that I had bought.
Since, I was getting ready to work on it again, and have to do this by myself, I found this video that help give me some info that will come in handy in about 4 weeks.
I hope it helps you.........
BTU's
this is not quite a "fix it" question.... I will be installing a gas wall furnace in a cottage. The cottage is approx. 720 sq. ft. How many BTU's should the furnace be? Is there a formula? ie considering wall height / windows / doors / etc.?
Basement question
Does anyone have any idea how to repair a leaky basement? It is coming from small cracks in the walls. In 2 places. It is not when it rains, but all the time. The areas it is coming from is not in or near any of the water lines in the house. My husband sealed all the windows down there recently and it didn't really make any difference. Our basement is under most of the house with a crawl place under 1 of the 7 rooms and nothing under the front room on the house. We are perplexed!
