question

i have a question that i would be interested in hearing people's opinion. i started running about 10 years ago and love it. i either run or power walk about 30 miles a week. i know i should add weight training and i will. i just recently added yoga 2 times a week and truly love that.
now, for my question. i was told that i should do less running because i am getting older (as we all are.) the running/ walking, has not bothered me at all. i am 5' 4" and am about 118 pounds. i am basically in good health and love my cardio. so far, nothing hurts me... thank G-d. i was also told that i "will" gain weight, just because i am getting older. i have maintained my weight, give or take 2 or 3 pounds for the longest time. so... should i worry?
after reading iron guys post about his weight training. i started wondering about my routine. any comments will be appreciated... thanks

Walking to be fit

Hello everyone,
I have walked my 10 miles this morning, and though I am a bit tired it sure gives me energy. Walking with the Exerstriding Poles has helped me go farther than I used to.
Have a great day

Metabolic Problem

I was medically diagnosed with extreme metabolic syndrome. I am 58 and 250lbs with a body fat of 26% and can't lose weight unless I consume less than a 1000 calories. Mr resting heart rate is 47, my blood pressure is 110/60. I take no medications except testosterone gel because I have a reading of 126 with no medication. With medication I have a reading of 325. (Normal range is 300 to 800). I work out with a personal trainer 3 days a week for one hour each session. I have no other health problems. I am on a high protein, low carb diet. I consume no sugar, carbonated beverages, or white flour. My total calories per day is 1400 to 1600 calories. I have been to 3 specialists and nobody can figure out my problem. I have tried green tea, CLA, red peppers, Omega 3, and cinnamon, to name just a few. Nothing works. Has anybody out there suffered with this problem? Any suggestions?

Current Workout

This is not the Rad approved method to fitness but my primary love is lifting weights so that's what I do. I'm a firm believer that if you don't do something that you love, you're probably not going to stick to it.

I'm careful to avoid overtraining and injury by varying my workout every 8 weeks or so. I'm about at the end of this particular workout.

swimming

I have an 16' round above ground pool, which I put up 2 weeks ago for the summer. My 3 year old granddaughter is staying with me for the summer and we have been going in the pool most afternoons after work. I started swimming around the edge (she thinks I am chasing her!) Boy do I feel it in my thighs and shoulders! What a refreshing way to exercise! You don't get sweaty and have fun at the same time! Since it has been over 100 here, it is too hot to walk so this has taken it's place.

Some Good Web Sites

I'm new here, so forgive me if these have already been posted. But here are some good links dealing with weight training:

Dave Draper Dave Draper was one of my early bodybuidling heroes. He's in his mid-sixties now and still going strong (even after quadruple bypass several months ago). His website is chock full of good information both from him and from various contributors to his on-line forum. Check it out!

ExRx A good site with tons of information. If you go to "Exercise Instruction" and then to "Exercise and Muscle Directory", you can click on a particular body part and see animations of the various exercises for that body part. It's pretty cool!

Bodybuilding.com Go the "Enter Supersite" and browse around. One cool thing is to click on "Exercises" on the left side, click on the body part you're interested in, and then you can filter the exercises by dumbbell only, barbell only, body weight only, machines only, etc.

T-Nation Another good site, maybe a little more hard core. For those a little more serious about their weight training and who want to stay current on the latest ideas.

Planter Facitus (sp?)

I have been diagnosed with the above ailment. My heels are painful for the first few steps in the morning and when I rest for long periods of time. I have been prescribed Celebrex but don't want to take it based on results of long term effects on the stomach. Can anyone reccomend other remedies to alleviate this? I work out with a trainer three times a week and have been off the tradmill since the diagnosis. I have been told there is no cure for this.
Regards, Jennifer

Medical Exam Results

I just got my latest medical exam results back. Tell me what you think. Total cholesterol: 180 HDL: 63 LDL: 88 Triglycerides: 141 Pulse rate: 56 Blood pressure: 90/60. I think everything looks good except the triglycerides. I don't know how it could be that high in the first place. When I used to eat a lot of muffins and pastries and quickbreads for breakfast years ago, my triglycerides were this high. But I don't eat like this anymore. How does one get that down?

Which works better to reduce inflammation?

Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin)?

Acetaminophen (Tylenol)?

Aspirin?

Also, besides ice, what are good alternative to meds to reduce inflammation?

Hernia

Darn! I have an inguinal hernia on a childhood surgery scar. The doctor was impressed that I could actually feel it because it's so small. But, fixing a hernia on an incision means real surgery with mesh and recovery time. So I'm juggling how to handle this because it's not an emergency. I'm the most concerned about changing my exercise routine. No lifting over 25 pounds. I could wait until January since I'm not a big winter sports fan, but I'm afraid to exercise now. I don't think I do anything that's not strenuous. I'm not sure I know how.

It doesn't help that I'm hitting my 30th anniversary next year and management has already implied they'd like me to retire. My husband wishes I wouldn't upset them, but I think we don't really need my job. Going to my step-father's funeral upset them last year. So, yeah they probably wouldn't like a hernia operation when I'm the picture of fitness.
