Eons Art School

A real group for artists of all levels, professional, amateur, hobbyists, it doesn't matter, because in this kind of a community of sharing, everyone can reap some benefit. Teachers get to teach, students learn, observers take in both sides, participants have a give and take.

Eons Art School Group

The Eons Art School group is intended to be a learning environment for artists. New students who want to practice and improve their skills, intermediate artists wishing to refine their talent, and more accomplished artists who wish to share their experience and knowledge with others are all welcome here.

Every artist is encouraged to post a Work in Progress (WIP) in the photo section of the home page for the members to comment upon. Member artists looking for tips and instruction are asked to leave this WIP up for a period of time as someone will always respond given a little time to consider or research the issue.

Artists are also invited to instructional graphics on topics ranging from perspective issues, general anatomy, medium techniques and the like.

Discussion is for everyone- professional critiques are invaluable, but so are comments from other artists, experienced or not, who can offer a fresh eye and bring out points that may otherwise be taken for granted. Don't forget the advice given may not always be used for a particular work, but it can still help another who reads the posts.

After a certain period of time has elapsed, the entire conversation, images and dialogue will be deleted from the general area and preserved in the “Files” section on the left side of the home page as a case instruction manual for anyone, at any time, to ponder at their own pace.

Be welcomed, and participate.

A newbie with questions.....

If this is a repeat.......please forgive me. I wrote a previous message and it seems to have floated out in internet space.

So glad I found this group. Although I have worked in acrylics and watercolours....the few times I tried oils the colors always muddied. I just posted a unfinished oil I am attempting now. Would appreciate help/suggestions/critique.

A still life i viewed in a museum will forever occupy a cell in my minute brain. The texture of the peel was so wonderful that I unconsciously reached out and touched it. Embarrassingly, a guard appeared and reprimanded me.

How do I achieve that textured orange peel effect with oil? On my palette, I tried to attain that texture using a scruffy....as I would with acrylics. Did not work.

Thank you for reading my message and even greater thanks for any help any of you can extend to me.

Delema

I've got a problem. I have a step-sister, she lives in CA, although we haven't had much time to spend with each other, she's like a soul sister to me and I think closer to me than her real sister. She was in last week and saw one of my paintings and wants to buy it. I would put it up for $400 if I was showing it. I hate this problem, I'd like to tell her I'd give it to her but can't do that either. I was thinking of 1/2 that $200. Any opinions? Any suggestions? Suz

In a Nutshell...

Gosh, I love that term. It implies two things, one I’m nuts and two I like the ocean right?

Right now I’m chewing on a piece of Angelo Ibleto’s Homemade Cajun Beef Jerkey, so this may take some time to write… and I’ll get to Angelo later.

I’m back in Maine. Took a long nap to clear the cob webs and the jet lag, and the jerkey will remove all memory of the taste of the lousy airplane coffee and pretzels.

(continued as the first comment which I will preface, is very long but enjoy!)

Sharing something

When you look at the scan of the letter I just posted, notice the old typewriter. It's very clear to me from the original, that she typed this herself. If little else, this small kudo makes that "long strange trip" during my journey as an artist not only amazing, but wonderful as well.

All those hours of practice, from pencil drawings of dogs in parked cars when I was fifteen just to scrape up some extra cash, to the painting of 52 murals in the enlisted quarters at Ft. Myer during two months while in the Navy, to the "Faces of the Fallen" portraits of heroes who will forever be frozen at a certain age, to the tremendous amount of sketching and painting done for others since returning from Cape Verde in 2002... all this and much more would never have been accomplished without my inner discipline and motivation to improve my artistic skills by practicing and drawing something daily.

Nothing comes out "perfect" the first or second or even the third time. But, if you don't give up on a painting or a drawing, you can turn it into something you will be proud to sign and then... the dedication, hard work and ultimate joy of that sketch or painting which later becomes the continuing memory of the one who takes it home and shares it with their loved ones for as long as the canvas or paper lasts, this alone is what an Artist can accomplish if they continue to practice.

If you're doing art just for the money, good luck! If you're painting to achieve immortality, good luck! If you're trying to express the world you see with pigment or graphite for others, don't be afraid to share it! I, for one, would love to see how you see the world. We have a large group here, and I sincerely wish that more of you would post your works in progress so that others could learn from your own "long strange trip"...

get ready for another change

We will have a new group front page soon. That's all I'll say on the matter at present.
But this does remind me of client's who change their mind and want an alteration after the varnish begins to dry. Hang in there folks.

Eons is contemplating some major changes to the appearance and functionality of the group home pages. One change will be the virtual elimination of graphics from the group's home page. Please join the Whaddya Think Group view link and express your opinion about the changes being contemplated.

New Oil

It was some time back that I posted questions about working on pressed wood. This is the piece that I finished a few weeks ago. Think it turned out OK. Suz

Art Museum

I've been too busy and too hot to paint this summer, but I happened to get to an art museum the other day. Here is a blog I wrote about it:

Art Museum

In spite of the hot muggy weather yesterday, I went along with my sister to visit the San Diego Art Museum's exhibit of Georgia O'Keefe and the Women of the Stieglitz Circle. It was the free Tuesday and was very crowded. Its good though that so many people are interested in viewing art. Unlike most of the visitors, I'm not interested in looking at the paintings from six feet away. I like to get close up and see the brush strokes and understand how the artist put the painting together. I'd never seen a real life Georgia O'Keefe -- only pictures in books where the paintings seem to have a smooth finish. I was surprised therefore to see brush strokes and paint applied with some thickness. There are raised margins at some of the the edges of color changes. And, her color combinations are so beautiful -- teal blue into pale salmon pink, for example. Her brushstrokes are so sure and clean - no wiping out or corrections. She must have done some planning ahead before executing the final painting. I can't imagine those paintings done ala prima. Afterward, we decided to stop in at our favorite Timken Gallery next door to gaze once more at their permanent collection of old masters. The textures of satin and velvet and human flesh are awesome. And how did they get that glossy finish with not a single brush stroke detected. The most durable impression I came away with though was of the Rembrandt -- it exuded such strength and even though it was mainly black with a few flesh colored dabs and pale gold highlights, it was so alive and so fresh, as if painted just the other day by some hugely talented contemporary artist.

Good Grief!

Some of you might remember that I cartoon as well as paint.

Well folks, on August 22nd, after a flight from Maine to California, I'm the featured cartoonist at a dinner function at the Charles M. Schultz Museum in Santa Rosa, California. The Gainsco Insurance Company has hired me to cartoon 55 guests in 3 hours. Gainsco also sponsors a race car and this car and drivers will compete at the Infineon Raceway on the 23rd. Wow, I get to meet Snoopy!

The two cartoons of the car, and the one of the owner of the company addressing a group are pretty much completed and I'll adhere them to the 18" x 24" background, which of course includes the company logo and the place and date. Sorry but my scanner isn't large enough to get all of the last cartoon in, but you can see that I've left spaces for the guest's facial cartoons.

The resulting poster/cartoon will be presented to each guest afterwards as a framed 18" x 24" print. I've left room at the bottom for the owner and the two drivers to sign it, so all in all, it'll be a nice memento for the guests.

Bottom line... from Wednesday through next Monday, I'll be incommunicado but will check in from time to time.

Also on the good news front, one of my Walker's Point paintings will be showcased in the foyer of the George and Barbara Bush Cultural Center at the University of New England. I've received my invitation (from both Mr. and Mrs. Bush) to attend the opening dedication which takes place in October, but that's a long time in the future, and I'll keep you posted,

Anyway, I'm sure I can leave you all unsupervised for a while! {{:-{)]]] (that's me and my beard lol)
